LONDON, Jan. 21.-Colonel T. E. Lawrence was burned in effigy on Tower Hill today by a crowd of British Communists after speakers had denounced the “activities of British imperialism” in Afghanistan. The orators included Shapurji Saklatvala, the Communist member of Parliament, who thundered against Lawrence's alleged part in England's Eastern diplomacy. The effigy was painted on a big banner held aloft on a pole. It showed Lawrence in Arab garb, scowling fiercely. As the flames curled up from his chin, finally obliterating his face entirely, cheers broke out from the crowd.

Taken together, the political forms canvased in this book — mass politics, postpolitics, antipolitics, hyperpolitics — may be visualized on a Cartesian plane structured by two axes: a politicization axis, measuring degrees of mobilization, and a social axis, measuring degrees of civic affiliation and membership. Plotted on these, the first line — an aggregate of turnout, protest activity, political assassination — shows a marked uptick in the wake of the 2008 credit crunch. At the same time, this upward sloping

sloping curve is crossed by a downward - sloping line: a continuous decline of indices tracking civic engagement. Mass politics, in this schema, belongs to a world in which society is both highly socialized and politicized, populated by movements with clearly identifiable social bases and ideologies. Its year of inception can be situated somewhere between 1848 and 1914; its passing between 1973 and 1989. After a mass - political peak in the 1930s, we witness a transition from a “wild” to a more “embedded” variant after 1945, as the postwar economic boom tempers militancy and encourages a newfound emphasis on the consumer household.
