ROBIN (eyes closed) There's always a fifth slap.
BARNEY (quietly) I don't want to be a sad guy at the bar, Robin.
She reaches over without opening her eyes and finds his hand.
ROBIN You're not. You're a smug guy in a very nice bed. Go to sleep.
A beat. Barney lets out a long breath. The panic drains out of his shoulders. He almost smiles.
BARNEY ...Legendary bed, though.
ROBIN Do not finish that word.
BARNEY (whispering) —dary.
She elbows him. He grins. He clicks off the light.
Darkness again. Then, in the dark:
BARNEY (V.O.) Best. Nightmare recovery. Ever.
ROBIN (V.O.) Go to SLEEP.
FADE OUT.

BARNEY (CONT'D) Three years. We lasted three years, Robin. And then — and then I went back to being some sad guy in a suit alone at the bar, and you flew around the world with your dogs, and Ted—
He can barely say it.
BARNEY (CONT'D) Ted showed up at your window. With the horn. The BLUE FRENCH HORN, Robin.
ROBIN (slowly waking, alarmed now) ...That's disgusting.
BARNEY I KNOW.
ROBIN After everything? He just — comes back around?
BARNEY That's what I said! I said it out loud and nobody would answer me!
Robin sits up fully now, wide awake, genuinely disturbed.
ROBIN Was Marshall at least a judge?
BARNEY (considering) ...Okay, that part they nailed.
ROBIN Good.
She flops back down, pulling him with her. Barney stares at the ceiling, still rattled.
BARNEY It felt so real. There was a whole slap. A fifth slap.
ROBIN (eyes closed) There's always a fifth slap.

SMASH CUT TO:
INT. BARNEY AND ROBIN'S BEDROOM — NIGHT
DARKNESS. Then a sharp, ragged GASP.
BARNEY bolts upright in bed, drenched in sweat, hair wild, eyes enormous. He's breathing like a man who just surfaced from deep water. He clutches the comforter to his chest.
He whips around.
ROBIN lies next to him, half-asleep, hair mussed, squinting at the ceiling light he's just clicked on with a panicked slap.
ROBIN (muffled, into pillow) ...Barney. It's four in the morning.
BARNEY (hoarse, urgent) Robin. Robin. I had the WORST nightmare.
She cracks one eye open. Sighs. Props herself up on an elbow with the weariness of a woman who has been here before.
ROBIN Okay. Was it the one where your suits come alive?
BARNEY No.
ROBIN The one where you have to wear the same tie two days in a row?
BARNEY (shudders) God, no. Worse.
He grabs her by the shoulders. Deadly serious.
BARNEY (CONT'D) We got divorced.
Robin blinks.

INT. MACLAREN'S PUB — NIGHT
The old booth. TED, MARSHALL, LILY, ROBIN, and BARNEY are crammed in, older now, glasses in front of them. The neon glows. The camera pulls back slowly, the way it does when a story is ending.
TED (V.O.) And that, kids, is the whole story. Everything. The blue French horn, the yellow umbrella, the goat, all of it. Every wrong turn that turned out to be exactly the right one.
The friends laugh at something we don't quite hear. Lily rests her head on Marshall's shoulder. Robin catches Barney's eye across the table and rolls her eyes at him — that private, married-people look.
TED (V.O.) (CONT'D) Because the thing about a long story is, you don't get to know while you're living it which parts are the important ones.
BARNEY raises his glass.
BARNEY To the only five people I'd ever legally testify on behalf of.
MARSHALL That's the nicest thing you've ever said.
BARNEY And the last. Cherish it.
They clink. The image begins to go soft and golden. Music swells. The screen starts to fade to—

First night in Vegas was a mix. Got 14,000 steps in, but coolered three times at the cash tables. Lunch and dinner were excellent. Got 9 hours of sleep, breakfast at The Henry (🤩) and now heading into WSOP for the Colossus.
