The air hung heavier than usual that morning, thick with the kind of dampness that settled into your skin and stayed there until the late fall came. Usually, it didn’t bother her much, but as the summers grew hotter and longer, she missed the natural rhythms of the seasons she’d known as a child. That didn’t stop her from getting up each day to do what her ancestors had done long before her. It was a family secret, a recipe for living: You did what you needed to get by, relied on what the land and waters gave, and repeated it again the next day. "

Working on a satire inspired by the “restoration” of one of my favorite cities and hoodoo. Looking around at all the crap they’re doing, the issue isn’t renovation or change. It’s need, it’s who does it benefit, and what utility does this have for the community. I see none.

I’d never wanted to jump in the damn thing, but that didn’t mean I didn’t feel a sense of D.C pride about its beauty. Now, the heat wafting off the reflection and sour smell reminded me of an upturned grave from a horror movie. I always wondered what the soil smelled like when a dead hand ripped through wet soil. "

A novel section from a book called Darkness for dreams that reads as follows: She looked like a college student, an intern on her day off. That’s what the other Escort had said. He watched the girl, as the signal from his watch caused her to unconsciously signal him; she tapped her shoes in the familiar rhythm. Whether or not she knew it, the pattern was unmistakable: one-two-two-one-four-four-three-pause-nine-pause-repeat.
The man’s gaze narrowed. That had to be the girl he was supposed to meet, but was it a good thing? With her brown Bantu knots tied with blue and white ombre ribbons and a matching tracksuit, she contrasted with the modern wood, and silver sterility of the cafe. She should have been more subtle and not pretty.
