In a first for Florida, Gov. DeSantis scheduled two people for execution on the same day. First in line is #JamesDuckett, and later on the evening of 7/28 #DominickOcchicone.
The last execution under current Ohio law was on July 18, 2018, when Robert Van Hook was put to death for the 1985 murder of David Self. Since that time Ohio has not carried out any executions. It's time to end the death penalty for good🥁
We are proud to stand with Ohioans to Stop Executions and others as we call on Ohio leadership to end the death penalty. Recently Gov. DeWine made a public announcement that after 40 years of trying to make the death penalty work, he came to the conclusion that it is simply not possible.
Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse, Florida decides to jump in and surprise us all. Earlier this week, Gov. DeSantis signed another execution warrant for #JamesDuckett on the SAME DAY they intend to execute #DominickOcchicone.
It's really that simple. Violence begets violence, though the government would have you believe the opposite. #StopExecutions
Tennessee is gearing up to execute #DarrellHines in just a few weeks. Darrell's execution comes on the heels of the State's latest execution failure. Of special concern is the fact that Darrell is yet another elderly individual who will need to be lifted onto the gurney.
❌When we didn't think it could get any worse, Gov. DeSantis found a way to outdo himself. In a first of its kind for the state, Gov. DeSantis rescheduled #JamesDuckett for execution to take place on the same day as their next execution.
#CarlosCuestaRodriguez is next in line to face execution in Oklahoma. Carlos accepts his guilt and has shown tremendous remorse for his crime, but after a lifetime of abuse, poverty, and injury that left his mental health unstable, the man that Oklahoma is trying to kill lives with dementia.
Gov. DeSantis has turned into one of the most prolific serial killers in history... it doesn't matter that he's the Governor. A killer is a killer. 📞 850-717-9337 🕯️ Should the execution move forward, join us at 5pm ET for a virtual vigil → us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regi...
#DennisSochor faces execution THIS evening in Florida. Yet AGAIN Florida will kill a man that would not be eligible for the death penalty had his case taken place in any other state. He was sentenced to death by non-unanimous jury of 10:2.
Join us THIS evening for a review of the upcoming cases and other death penalty developments starting at 6pm PT/9pm ET. As of right now, just two executions are scheduled... both of which are in Florida... surprise! Surprise! Register for the ZOOM audience here 👉 us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regi...
As this country celebrates the 4th of July today, we must remember that freedom can only exist so long as we ensure everyone is free, too. Today, let us recommit to each other's freedom... to each other's peace... to each other's comfort... to love.
We would also like to especially recognize the tireless efforts of our head organizer, Scott Langley. Though he may say differently, Scott is integral to making this event what it is.
Many thanks to each individual and organization that made this year's Fast possible. Amnesty International, The National Council of Churches, CURE, The United Methodist Church General Board of Church and Society, and The Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia to name a few.
Now, the clock starts ticking back until we are together again... and we sincerely hope that not too many more Fast and Vigils are necessary.
There's much that could be said about this week. What a beautiful community we've built over the past 33 years. Despite the record-breaking heat and humidity, this community's dedication to the cause is unparalleled.
We are in awe of the dedication of our fellow abolitionists, who show up no matter the “rain, snow, or blistering heat”. 33 years strong 💪 open.substack.com/pub/deathpen...
It has been a long few days for those of us here at Starvin’ For Justice. Temperatures are often pretty miserable during this event, but that is even more true this year with temperatures over 100ºF and very little respite in the evenings.
This week the US commemorated a grim milestone — 50 years since the “modern era” of the death penalty began. States all over the country have grappled with how to make the death penalty more fair. Fifty years of experimentation and 1660+ executions later and the punishment is no less arbitrary.
Fifty years ago, the Supreme Court's decision in Gregg v. Georgia resumed the death penalty in the US. We invite you to join us on July 2, 2026, at 6pm ET at the U.S. Supreme Court. 50 years of the death penalty, 50 years of failure. End the Death Penalty Now!
Race, geography, local politics, determined the outcome, not the brutality of the crime. The Court forced states that wanted to continue ulitilizing the punishment to rewrite their death penalty schemes, attempting to mitigate the arbitrariness endemic to the system since its inception.
54 years ago today, the US Supreme Court struck down all death penalty laws in the country. Why? Each justice had a different rationale, but at the core of their opinions was the inherent unfairness in who received a death sentence and who didn't.
Death Penalty Action is pleased to be able to host Maurice Chammah, of The Marshall Project, tomorrow for a discussion about Gregg v. Georgia - the case that upheld new death penalty laws after the US Supreme Court struck them down in the 1972 Furman v. Georgia decision.
It is a shame that such an event must continue, but we are grateful to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with each of you. Abolition.org
The Abolitionist Action Committee and Death Penalty Action would like to extend our sincerest appreciation to every single organization and individual who has made this year's Starvin' For Justice 33rd Annual Fast and Vigil to Abolish the Death Penalty possible.
🕯️Should the execution proceed, join us at 5pm ET to be in vigil for Dusty → us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regi...
👨🏻🦳 Dusty Spencer is next in a long line of elderly individuals who will have to be lifted from their wheelchair onto the execution gurney.👨🏼🦽➡️At 74 years old, what is even the point? 📞 850-717-9337 - there can be NO BUSINESS AS USUAL when the state is about to kill someone!
