Good visit to Titchwell this afternoon/evening. 18 Yellow-legged Gulls from Island Hide (many gulls roosting on eastern compartment not viewed) & ad Caspian Gull. Four adult limosa including yellow flagged 12. Arctic Skua & Manx Shear on the sea. Adult Cuckoo high west. 70 species #norfolkbirding

Drew a blank on our search for Quail in the Norfolk Fens 2200-2345 hrs but saw 5 Barn Owls and heard Stone Curlew. Perhaps too early in the night to be trying? Also many cereal fields now harvested but still plenty of good habitat checked. Anyone else trying night-time searches? #NorfolkBirding

Successful evening out with Thetford Forest Ringing Group on long-term Nightjar project. Nest found and adults caught. We retrieved a gps tag off the female that had been on a couple of weeks. The male was a retrap, ringed August 2023 as a 2cy bird, first capture since then. Top data! #ornithology

Very early start for Bethany and I to get to RSPB Snettisham ahead of the rising tide. We enjoyed scanning through c500 Med Gulls and reading some rings. Onto the waders and Bethany read a few Blackwits. One Little Stint on the pits, 38 Spoonbill, 4 Spotshanks and more! #BirdingNorfolk

We saw this stunning limosa Black-tailed Godwit at Minsmere on 12th July. It was ringed in The Netherlands on 1 June. #BirdingSuffolk1

Great visit to Minsmere today. Temminck's Stint, Black Tern, adult Little Gull, 2 Roseate Terns and a great selection of waders. A stunning juvenile limosa (colour-ringed) and 3 adult limosa - look forward to receiving the ringing details. A juvenile Caspian Gull flew over. #SuffolkBirding

Langmere is totally dry now. It has held water for just three months since August 2025. Going to make the patch much harder work! Three broods of Mallard relocated to Fenmere which has a little bit of water. Nice to see 2 Little Grebe chicks there. Ringmere levels dropping fast #NorfolkBirding

Last Saturday we had an enjoyable visit to Welney WWT and were thrilled to see two juvenile limosa. One was flagged and one was unringed and they originate from a breeding pair in the Fens. It's a very rare sight these days to see a juvenile! They are really super-smart. #NorfolkBirding

After the excitement of rising water levels on Langmere in April, levels are dropping again, and also dropping on Ringmere and Fenmere. Good to see a brood of three Lapwing on Langmere. Not hopeful of any water over the winter months.

Minsmere was great for butterflies and odonata today. Good to see a number of Purple Hairstreak down low for a change #butterflies

Spent the whole day at Minsmere today - such a rich reserve with so much to look at. 11 Spotted Redshanks, 6 Green Sands, 2 Cattle Egret, 2 Spoonbill, breeding gulls and terns, frequent Bittern feeding flights. Med Gulls - my favourite! Good ring-reads submitted and awaiting details #SuffolkBirding

Completed my 30th year of @bbs-birds.bsky.social surveys on this square in Thetford Forest. Nice morning with Redstart, 2 Spotted Flycatchers, 2 Cuckoos. Just 2nd record of Spot Fly and 3rd Redstart on my surveys here. Last Turtle Dove was 2007. Give BBS a go if you can, very rewarding.

Brood of five Whooper Swans at WWT Welney in front of the main obs. These are usually injured birds, or at least one of the pair is injured, and they remain at Welney year-round. #NorfolkBirding

Back on my #BTO Woodcock Survey square at West Harling after a gap of two years (life was busy!). Pleased with one Woodcock fly past and amazing views of a Tawny Owl that swooped in and perched up close for a few seconds. Surveyed this square on and off since 2013. #NorfolkBirding

First visit of the year to RSPB Frampton Marsh and a reminder what a fantastic reserve it is. Lovely views of Temminck's Stint, 2 Pale-bellied Brents in with 300+ Dark-bellied, thriving Black-headed Gull colony. No sign of AGP between 1345-1930 just 4 European Goldies on Marsh Farm. #lincsbirding

Finally over 100 species for the year on my patch at East Wretham Heath. It's been slow this year - this date a year ago I was 6 ahead. Not had Swift here yet so hopefully a few more species to be added. #NorfolkBirding
