The Election Assistance Commission is a bipartisan federal agency established to help states administer elections. After Trump fired the leadership, voting rights advocates are sounding the alarm about the president’s attempts to meddle with voting months before the midterms. https://bit.ly/44rLhVh
A Democratic majority in Congress and the White House won’t be enough to bring progressive change, @briantylercohen.bsky.social says. “There is no world in which this Supreme Court … is not going to upend any progressive legislation the second they get their hands on it.” https://bit.ly/4qskS3m
Trump launched his latest attack on voting by ousting the remaining commissioners of a key federal agency that helps administer elections. Experts say that much of the group’s work on the 2026 elections has already been conducted. But that’s a cold comfort for some. https://bit.ly/4vIppAl
(3/7) THIS IS NOT "BUSINESS AS USUAL" The department also announced plans to send election observers to several Democratic strongholds. Election observers have historically been used to help protect voting rights, but this effort appears to be an attempt to intimidate voters at the polls.
(2/7) INTIMIDATION The DOJ threatened election officials in 50 states with criminal prosecution over possible noncitizen voting — a scarcely seen occurrence despite GOP rhetoric. The effort could leave eligible voters little time to fix errors if they are wrongly purged at the last minute.
🧵Trump is turning to threats, coercion and intimidation to restrict voting access ahead of the midterms. It comes after judges blocked several of the administration’s efforts to control elections in recent weeks. Here's what to know👇
How many eligible voters have registration records with current information? New research indicates most states maintain accurate registration lists – despite Republicans’ unsupported claims that voter fraud is rampant across the country. https://bit.ly/3TqrPG0
California Gov. Gavin Newsom is introducing new legislation to make seizing ballots before they’re counted a felony. And he’s being clear about who the law is targeting. https://bit.ly/4yfgWH9
The Trump administration is losing in court over and over and over again. But that doesn’t spell the end of the story, Marc Elias says. “For every time we beat them in court, they can use other tactics.” Stay vigilant. Stay in the know: https://bit.ly/4qskS3m
The Trump administration wanted a federal judge to pause her order shutting down the use of a federal database to certify registered voters’ citizenship status. In response, Judge Sparkle Sooknanan berated the federal government in a blistering 23-page opinion. https://bit.ly/4wdNPTn
UPDATE: Georgia Republicans appealed a lower court's dismissal of their lawsuit seeking to give members of the state's MAGA-controlled election board access to Georgia's election night reporting hub. If the court grants them access, it could open the door to partisan interference.
Trump's DOJ is carrying out a critical effort to takeover the elections: sending election monitors to Democratic strongholds. We'll continue to track Trump's attacks on the midterms. Follow us for more.
Nate Schatzline, a Christian nationalist and Trump-allied election denier, could soon take over Texas’ elections. Even if he doesn’t, he could play a key role in shaping the state’s election policies. Here's how: https://bit.ly/4goLMqn
FYI: The DOJ sending election monitors during federal elections is not unusual. But targeting Democratic cities escalates fears about the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to interfere in the midterms. https://bit.ly/4aJwtFb
⚠️ Trump’s DOJ threatened top election officials in all 50 states with criminal prosecution if they knowingly retain noncitizens on voter rolls. The action comes as the GOP continues to allege widespread noncitizen voting — a problem for which they have not produced evidence. https://bit.ly/4wBgHoh
BREAKING: A federal court denied the Trump administration's request to reopen access to a DHS database created to purge noncitizens from the rolls. The decision comes one day after another judge ordered DHS to give four red states access to the system again.
WIN: The 10th Circuit revived a lawsuit against an anti-voting group's voter intimidation practices, which included showing up at voters' houses and taking pictures of their residence. The court ordered a new trial after finding a lower court improperly excluded evidence.
🧵Trump’s DOJ will send election monitors to the polls in Democratic strongholds for the 2026 primaries. It’s framing it as routine election monitoring. The reality? It’s one of the department’s many tactics aimed at targeting election officials before the midterms. Here's what you need to know👇
🚨BREAKING: The DOJ asked the full 6th Circuit to rehear its lawsuit seeking access to Michigan's unredacted voter data after it affirmed a lower court dismissal last month. The June ruling marked the first appellate loss in the department's sweeping effort for access to states' private voter data.
SCOTUS will hear the Republican argument for kicking eligible voters off the rolls in the lead-up to Election Day. We break down all you need to know about Trump and the GOP's attack on the NVRA. For more, check out our full explainer: https://bit.ly/44HbH5l.
⚠️Trump’s position coming out of this Supreme Court term is that he controls the U.S. Postal Service, Marc Elias says. We don’t have the luxury of waiting to see what happens next. We are taking a stand now against this attack on our democracy. Join our fight: https://bit.ly/4qskS3m
🦀 Maryland will take the first step toward drawing a new map that favors Democrats in all eight congressional districts for the 2028 election. But the changes will ultimately be up to Maryland voters in November. https://bit.ly/4y90yaZ
Trump doesn’t simply accept his losses and move on. He escalates his preposterous claims and rhetoric even further, Marc Elias says. “We all saw what that led to on January 6, 2021.” Help us stand up to Trump and fight for our democracy: https://bit.ly/4qskS3m
The DOJ wants to appeal every defeat in Trump’s nationwide campaign to obtain unredacted state voter data. They have yet to win a single court order to obtain unredacted statewide voter data. https://bit.ly/4yadPjI
WIN: A Florida court dismissed a GOP lawsuit seeking to block certain statistical methodologies from being used in the 2030 Census. The case was part of a broader Republican effort to limit methods designed to account for harder-to-reach populations such as lower-income communities.
UPDATE: A federal judge denied DOJ's request to pause an injunction against Trump's mail voting executive order, confirming the order remains blocked in 23 blue states and D.C. The DOJ appealed the injunction to the First Circuit last week.
UPDATE: The USPS appealed an order blocking its proposed rule that forces states to share voter lists with the federal government before receiving mail ballots. If the rule is allowed to stand, it would be an alarming step in Trump's sweeping attack on mail voting.
Thousands of incarcerated people are legally eligible to vote but have been blocked from casting their ballot. This widespread erosion of voting rights is driven not by laws, Bob Libal writes, but by a lack of infrastructure and misinformation. Here’s the solution: https://bit.ly/4wyVFXr
‼️ Republicans often claim that noncitizens vote in U.S. elections at a level that warrants showing proof of citizenship to vote. But these requirements do not just keep noncitizens from voting – they also disenfranchise eligible voters. https://bit.ly/3QThpxZ
Young people’s role in building a freer and more democratic America is often overlooked. That’s why youth and their older allies should be coming together to ensure a multiracial, multiethnic, and multigenerational democracy, Yael Bromberg and Cornell Williams Brooks write. https://bit.ly/3R527pI
