#blug disclosure day is on my mind !!!

6/13/26 - Disclosure Day

I wanna go to bat a little bit for Disclosure Day, or at least get some good word out when it seems like most of the takes i've seen are negative. nobody involved in Disclosure Day needs any help from me re: marketing or reception but it's not the *people* i'm here to defend, it's the movie (and that'll probably sound like defending the people sometimes).

I thought it was awesome with caveat. I thought spielberg executed a perfect "never sleep on" performance on the strength of the set pieces alone. Emily Blunt gave my favorite acting performance in maybe a long time (from anyone). the tension they're able to stir up in some of these scenes felt raw and real. the end is really bold!

The caveat is that the dialogue is *rough* at points, too many points. it's awkward and extremely earnest. i was giggling at funny lines all night. but that's no biggie.

and hey, they had trouble with some of the visuals. it wasn't a huge budget! some of the cg stuff was too smoothed and some of the production design was a little cardboard. you might need a little imagination to paper over the issues. and *that's okay*.

John williams! his approach can be a little dated!

And THAT'S FINE. let your mind glide over these things unaffected. they don't indicate any core rot, they're just blemishes. Be An Adult. deal with it.

In the spirit of self-reflection, though, there are plenty of movies where i *have* gotten worked up by those issues, and that sounds like hypocrisy.

the thing is, those movies didn't have something that Disclosure Day has: a really interesting perspective.

Steven spielberg believes in aliens. he's talked about it a lot recently. if he hasn't outright admitted it, he's pointed towards the big hole in his non-admission and nudged his eyebrows a couple times. he wanted to make a movie about believing in aliens. and if you're open to a little credulity, he found a way to dive into your mind and flip the switch that makes you see things like he does, if only for 145 minutes.

It's not a question (the alien question) that i spend much time on. i barely have an opinion about it. but the end credit daze had me really considering my duty to doing my own research and finally uncovering the truth of it all. i was aflame. the desire has gone down since then, but my memory of it remains. it was powerful.

I felt a lot of emotional connection to the movie as well, and i cried for a solid 20 minutes somewhere in the middle, but that doesn't feel as relevant to me as that persuasive power, that confrontational energy that forces you to take a stance. Not by bullying you into it, but by teaching you about it, the philosophical and the practical, and by showing you its practice and fulfillment.

Are there wider lessons about life and living it? instructive metaphors about real-world problems? not a lot that i remember. but i think there is a lot you can learn about yourself while face-to-face with maybe THE existential question. learn how to value yourself. how to value the human race and the people who make it up. learn you should really consider any faith in this context, and you should buy a webcam to point at the sky. sure, Disclosure Day gets a little breathless at times, but it's still worth listening to; it has so much more to give than it could ever take away. || derek
