Mothapalooza has kicked off! A mind blowing amount of incredible moth stuff going on here with such cool and sweet folks!
Night 1 of mothapalooza, we got about 1000 bugs. Night 3 we got 4000. but Night 4 we got 52,000+ bug sightings! It's making me have to redo some parts of our software to avoid default limits in Yolo, and pytorch stuff!

Our whole pipeline (labeling to training to detecting) is done entirely LOCALLY on a LAPTOP. And we even proved it this week doing this at a remote hacking retreat with low internet. You can have amazing AI stuff without giant data centers if you have actual use cases!
me + @wellreadpanda.bsky.social have been hand crafting another artisanal, open, machine-learning insect detector for #Mothbox like devices w data from a dozen more countries and using the new Yolo26-obb model, and works wonderfully! We use rotated boxes to reduce cognitive load of human reviewers.
Also if you don't know how to convert your images to get a pixel/mm ratio, FEAR NOT. I made a little feature to help you measure stuff easily too!
I got an itch and added a Pixel Mass feature in our software. You can do a fun process to calculate how much real-world area your insects would cover. This is apparently a heuristic some scientists can use as a proxy for biomass estimations and has been a requested feature during our travels.

At the Bionic Blitz in Marburg, Germany! Check out the gorgeous moths they have in this botanical garden from last night! me and @wellreadpanda.bsky.social set up 6 traps and surveyed changed in biodiversity along with a bunch of other groups using things like LIDAR and RADAR!
By the way, if you feel like your target is drooping a bit low, you can put an extra tie instead of around the bottoms of the legs.But maybe a zip tie parallel through the two holes through the legs, and that sometimes supports it up a bit better. M6 bolts will be the best, though

A great use of @illecta.bsky.social 's amazing set of moths is tossing them in front of groups of moth scientists and watching them start organizing them. This could be a great tool to learn some of the basic families of moths!
