Winged: You can spend 2 Hope to gain the ability to fly until the end of the scene. The effect also ends if you mark a Stress.

Lore:
The Dusk Guardians of the Yore-fenril Elves are iconic in the northern mountains for their ferocious speed and lethal strikes. Their axes form a large part of their legend, fashioned after the Dusk Griffons that live within those mountains. Their blades are shaped like razor-sharp wings, the pommel a barbed claw.

For this adventure I've gone a little above and beyond and created a handy online app you can use to help keep track of your players' progress. As they play, you can randomly select Slightly Useful Items for them, and generate XP when they interact with them. More details in the alt text!

If she decides to pick it up, she'll earn XP towards the Sorcerer and Warlock classes. If she earns enough XP in one of these classes, she'll be able to choose to advance to Level 1/2 in that class and gain some new abilities.

It features a custom system for tracking characters' interactions with different random items and letting them steer themselves towards the ones they have the most affinity with.

Starting the Adventure
Players should create character sheets for new characters who have a reason to be in the town where you are placing the adventure. These characters don’t yet have a character class, but have the following features.

Ability Scores. Generate ability scores using the “point cost” system, with a total of 18 points assigned between the abilities. No ability should have a value higher than 13. Calculate bonuses as normal. No saving throw proficiencies.
Background. Assign a character background appropriate to the back story you have in mind for the character. The character gains all the benefits of the background: for the 2014 rules this means skill and tool proficiencies; for 2024 it also includes ability score increases and a feat. They can choose up to 2 items from the starting equipment list that they might realistically be carrying when not intending to go on an adventure, and 15 gp (the remainder of their starting equipment is presumed to be at their home).

Weapon Proficiency. The character is proficient in any specific weapons that normally come with their background, and no others.
Species. Choose the character’s species as normal, including any benefits that normally start at level 1. In the 2014 rules, this includes ability score increases.
Other Stats. The character starts with a hit point maximum of 6 plus any bonuses. Calculate their AC and Initiative bonus as normal. They also should choose their known languages and alignment. Their proficiency bonus is +2.

Background Experience
Most characters won’t start from a blank slate, as their background predisposes them to particular classes. At the start, give each character 10 XP (one tally mark) in the following classes, depending on their chosen background. If their background isn’t one from the list, or if their back story justifies it, you can assign classes as you deem appropriate. (This list includes backgrounds from both editions of D&D 5e)

Over on Facebook a person just told me DMs shouldn't be paid because "these days, AI can do what a DM does".

OP: I haven't played D&D since the 80s and would love to return back to the game but when I discovered D&D channels on Discord and try to get into a game, DMs want to charge me to run a game. I refuse to pay to play TTRPG game. I can see paying for a video game of D&D but not a TTRPG. Does anyone know how can I get into a game where returning player wants to play?

Me: Just out of interest, why do you feel so strongly about this issue? It sounds like you almost feel outraged that people would charge a fee to run games. DMing is a lot of work, it doesn't feel unreasonable to me that someone might want to be recompensed for their time.

OP: because I didn't start playing D&D with my friends as a job. It's a 'Game'. I do it for a enjoyment. AI, these days, can do what a DM does. I am not paying for that either. If you are being paid, you are not there for the fun, just the money. That person is a useless part of the group. It you want to be paid for your time then get a REAL job. I don't pay someone to play cards so why would I play them for D&D? I understand it takes more skill to DM then playing cards but not enough to pay for.

What are Slightly Tables? They're things like this - themed collections of inspirational ideas, designed to add a fun twist to your games.

A collection of Slightly Weird Landmarks, starting with Angel Oak ("A lone tree at the crest of a hill. Once a year the sun lights it with a bright celestial corona. I don't think people have been talking enough about the preview of new adversaries coming up for Daggerheart, and the absolute middle-finger they're raising to Wizards of the Coast (and others). This could be an extremely important moment for IP law. 🧵

Latest RP mag from @runicpressgames.com is out and it's an Oops, All Frogs edition! www.patreon.com/posts/135468... Tons of amphibian content: Demon Toads, Aeon Tadpoles, Echoed Croakers, even a Rain of Frogs spell. And here are a few Slightly Debilitating Toxins to get you in the mood.

A table of poisons, the first five of which are:

Croak: Ironically not obtained from any kind of amphibian but distilled from a rare earthworm, this mild poison causes anyone subjected to it to be unable to speak for up to 8 hours, instead producing only bullfrog-like croaks. After the immediate effect wears off, sufferers develop an intense thirst that lasts for several days.
Double Dose: A favorite of assassins, this poison has the unusual property that it is usually completely without symptoms on first exposure, but it sparks a powerful immune reaction. If the person
is exposed a second time, the effects are dramatic and usually fatal. Even more strangely, death can generally be averted by swiftly administering a third dose.
Exsanguinator: A viscous (and vicious) serum derived from snake venom, this poison destroys the clotting factor of the victim’s blood for several weeks, causing all wounds to bleed copiously even when bandaged. Few survive without continuous medical attention.
Float ‘n’ Bloat: Harvested from black rain frogs during extreme wet seasons, this poison causes those who are affected by it to blow up dramatically like a balloon, becoming lighter than air in the process. They float uncontrollably about for a few minutes before deflating. The poison is otherwise mostly harmless
Glow Worm: The mild name for this poison doesn’t really capture its dramatic effect, as those under its influence light up in bright, shimmering colors that cycle perpetually through the rainbow
like a psychedelic trip. The colors start to subside after a few minutes, leaving the victim with a residual glow and a cloying nausea that lingers for weeks.

Thanks for asking! I love that whole book, but if I had to pick my favourite bit, it's the section on parasites. I'm particularly proud of the Dragon Botfly, which lays its eggs in dragons' skin, but is tolerated because it also waylays travelers and brings their gold back to the hoard.
