Is it just me, or does this post start off like the opening sentence to an intriguing (or perhaps annoyingly self aware?) booker prize shortlisted novel? Sadly, it goes off the rails before it could reach its true potential.

In Athens for a conference. A lovely balmy evening and a nice chance for a meal at the hotel’s rooftop restaurant. I can see the Parthenon. I’ve never visited the city before, but hope to get to the museum before I leave.

Gorgeous light on my run/walk yesterday evening. Mostly walking tbh.

Looking upwards to a second or third storey window set in a red brick wall (unusual for Glasgow). The evening light makes the bricks glow. There’s a fancy looking white cat looking out, and a pot plant inside.

Looking west and downhill from the edge of Glasgow’s city centre. The sun is low in the sky, the light is gorgeous, the shadows and silhouettes tres aesthetique.

How very timely! I was in Copenhagen very recently (for parkrun), and got this snap of the most famous denizen of that rather lively city. As for fishy folk, honourable mention to ‘Cabin in the Woods’ for their use of a merman (“They’re terrifying, and the cleanup…”).

Some of my favourite objects from the Danish Design Museum, here in Copenhagen.

THE FIRST OBJECT
The first object to be included in the Museum collection was a soup terrine shaped like a cabbage acquired in 1893.
It was manufactured in Kastrup in 1755-1761. Cabbage is a large bud. It is the oldest known vegetable and has been cultivated for more than 5,000 years.
In ancient Egypt, it was worshipped, and it has been used as a cure against snake bite, bad nerves and drunkenness.

I’ve never really liked Gaugin, but this painting is somewhat Turner-esque, and I think it is rather charming.

Enjoying the Ny Carlsberg Glypotek. Although I’ve left it a bit late to enjoy this beer on the roof terrace (chilly!).

A photograph of a bust of a man. He has an enormously characterful face, and bears a pretty good resemblance to the excellent actor, Pete Postlethwaite. The inscription tellls us he is ‘Marcus Vilnius Varro’ and it was made in Rome, from marble, roughly AD 98-117. I can’t find anything else about him.

People may be aware of my long standing love for the running app ‘Zombies, Run!’, and I’m excited to see that (after a hiatus) they are now about to release new story content! The narrative is great (created and written by Naomi Alderman), and I’d love to know that more runners were enjoying it! 🧟🧟‍♀️🧟‍♂️
