Birder. Phonescoper. Prone to the occasional twitch. Avid patcher of Norton Common, 9 times out of 10, it's rubbish, but it's that 1 that keeps me going. tinyurl.com/NortonCommonBirds My YouTube channel:
A really enjoyable twitch down south to see the Hudsonian Godwit with @wakeybirder.bsky.social and @stuart-churchill.bsky.social. There was no sign upon arrival but the bird was relocated a couple of hours later. My 3rd lifer of the year. #phonescoped
Another enjoyable trip up North to see the Marsh Sandpiper at Bolden Flats NR. My first lifer of 2026. #phonescoped
An enjoyable couple of hours at South Gare today, the Olive-backed Pipit being the main target as it was a lifer and it showed well at times. My first (6) Snow bunting of the year were also good to see and made the trip even more worthwhile. #phonescoped
My first lifer of 2025, the Eastern yellow wagtail at Winteringham, Lincolnshire. It was very blustery and was quite mobile feeding with 10+ Pied wagtail, but showed really close at times. #phonescoped
Sand martin just appeared in front of Ness hide at Far Ings nature reserve. @lincsbirding.bsky.social
You can get to them on mobile, but it seems to be more difficult than it needs to be!
An enjoyable 5.2 mile walk out on patch rewarded me with a decent return of 42 species. The highlights were Little grebe and Marsh harrier as I didn't manage to record either in the whole of 2024! #patchbirding ebird.org/checklist/S2...
The vast majority of my PUC detections are coming from the local Robin. I'm considering turning off detections for Robin to see if that further reduces the errors. However, over the past few days, I've started to up probability and confidence and have already noticed an improvement.
On patch, I managed only 91 species on 52 checklists, however in a usual year I tend to submit between 70-100. Still, 3 new species got on the patchlist with 2 flyover Ring-necked parakeet on 18th Sept, and the flood in May enticed 2 Shelduck down on the 2nd and a Redshank on the 7th. #patchbirding
My Yorkshire list crept up to 339. New additions being Collared flycatcher at Spurn, Black-winged pratincole when it eventually moved over the border, finally got Storm petrel, on a Spurn seawatch, Pale-legged leaf warbler at Bempton and ending with the Snow geese at Swine Moor. #YorkshireBirding
My birding in 2024 both started and ended with a mega. The Essex Northern waterthrush and the Kent Yellow warbler. Other lifers: BW pratincole, Cirl bunting, Collared flycatcher, Cory's & Great shearwater, Dark-eyed junco, Pale-legged leaf warbler, Red-breasted goose and Whiskered tern. #UKBirding
Happy to help Steve. Mine took about an 1hr 30 to upload 2500 detections. There's no prior warning the PUC shuts down after uploading, the more tips we share between us the better. Talking of detections, this is pretty cool. Just filter to find your PUC. app.birdweather.com/detections/ #BWPUC
Another tip to new PUC users. If you have lowered your probability down to 0.1%, you will get a couple of species suggested that are extremely unlikely for your location. Click on detections of that species, then probability, then change the Birdnet default to no longer show them. #BWPUC
A murky but productive walk on patch, I took the thermal to look (unsuccessfully) for Jack snipe, but had a decent count of 31 Common. Then 2 very vocal Raven (only 3rd patch record) came in from the East. They landed briefly in the distance, then continued West. ebird.org/checklist/S2... #UKBirding
They were something I had considered, but I ended up making a housing for the PUC instead, which seems to be keeping any wind or rain from directly hitting it. I'm tempted to try and make some form of parabolic dish to add to the front of it to try and help it collect as much sound as possible.
As a little heads up to new Birdweather PUC users, as default, location privacy is set to off and will pretty much display its exact location to others. To turn this on, it's in the settings from the home screen on the PUC app. It'll then just show the general area the PUC is in. #BWPUC
I ordered mine last week, and it arrived in 7 days. In total, the PUC cost £230.57. I also bought this extra to provide constant power, a 4m weather resistant USB-C cable: amzn.eu/d/8igmvRq. The device is weatherproof, but I had some old wood spare and thought I'd add a little bit more protection.
The 2 Snow geese at Swine Moor, East Yorks, came into roost at 1618 this evening, it was an incredible sight and sound watching them and the 1000s of Pink-footed geese swirling around as they dropped in. #UKbirding #phonescoped
An enjoyable day at Spurn with @stuart-churchill.bsky.social, the 2 Shore lark showed well at Easington Lagoons taking my Spurn list to 253. We also had a look at Welwick Saltmarsh, where a Merlin gave good scope views. 2 SEO and 2 Great egret were the best of the rest there. #UKbirding #phonescoped
Lovely weather for a stroll around the patch, but reasonably quiet birdwise with only 22 species. It was nice to see a pair of Stonechat, only my 2nd record of the year. #patchbirding #UKBirding ebird.org/checklist/S1...
An enjoyable hour out on patch, a skein of 42 Pink-footed geese went over high NW and 43 Golden plover dropped briefly in the fields, both of these were new for the patch yearlist, taking it up to 89. ebird.org/checklist/S1... #patchbirding #UKBirding
A short but fantastic trip out this morning at Bempton and Brid. Both the presumed Isabelline shrike and Grey phalarope showed extremely well! #UKbirding ##phonescoped
A fantastic day birding around the Flamborough area, starting with the Pale-legged leaf warbler at Bempton, then the Siberian stonechat at North Dykes, finishing at Holmes Gut sewage works with Icterine warbler, RB flycatcher and Yellow-browed warbler. #UKbirding #Yorkshirebirding #phonescoped
Another quality visit to Spurn today with @stuart-churchill.bsky.social, where we recorded 85 species. Plenty of highlights, with the standouts being a Common redstart, Firecrest, Pied fly, Red-breasted flycatcher, 2 Spotted fly, and at least 5 Yellow-browed warbler. #UKbirding #phonescoped
A walk down to the point at Spurn rewarded us with over 50 species, highlights being Common redstart, Hobby, 2 Red-breasted flycatcher, Spotted flycatcher, several Stonechat, Whinchat and a Yellow-browed warbler. #UKbirding #phonescoped
A couple of hours on patch produced a bit of quality rather than quantity with a first patch record of Ring-necked parakeet, 2 together heading south, closely followed by only my 9th record of Little owl. Also, the first Grey wagtail since January. #patchbirding #UKbirding ebird.org/checklist/S1...
Hard going again on the patch at Norton Common, but it was a nice walk out in the sunshine and lovely views of a Red kite made it worthwhile. ebird.org/checklist/S1... #ukbirding #patchbirding
A great but soggy day at Spurn with @jussyblade.bsky.social and @stuart-churchill.bsky.social. We recorded 84 species, highlights being RB shrike, Pallid harrier (Spurn tick #251), Wood warbler, and Wryneck. Topped off with a good supporting cast of commoner migrants. #UKbirding #phonescoped
Great day at Spurn with @stuart-churchill.bsky.social. We finished with 80 species, 3 of which were year ticks for me (RB shrike, Spot fly and Whinchat). Up to 215 now, my highest total since 2019. Another highlight was a Storm petrel, a very welcome addition to our Yorkshire list! #ukbirding
A great few hours at @rspb.bsky.social Frampton Marsh this morning, possibly my favourite reserve outside of Yorkshire. Standout highlights out of the 63 species we recorded were the Baird's sandpiper and 9 Crane over just as we got out of the car.
