Subsurface water temperature anomalies for the date are nearing + 11 degrees C (+ 20 degrees F) in the equatorial warm water plume of El Niño at 100 meters depth at about 118 degrees West longitude or about 1,000 km (600 miles) west of the Galápagos Islands.

The total excess heat content of this El Niño warm plume/ pool is now 70% greater than the previous record in the 1997-98 El Niño.

The global weather and climate impacts through boreal spring will be catastrophic. I think we will have a “Double Blue Ocean Event” (sea ice in each polar region dropping below 1 M square km) during 2027 which will lurch the planet into massively accelerating atmospheric warming.

The global uppermost ocean is simply absorbing way too much heat. Barring rapid global agreement, development, and deployment of Solar Radiation Management there is no going back.

Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies for the date now jump to + 5.6 degrees C (+ 10.1 degrees F) on the equator just west of the Galapagos while prediction models also jump for the ENSO 3.4 region of the equatorial Pacific SE of Hawaii to a staggering + 4.9 degrees C ( + 8.8 degrees F) peak for this building record smashing El Niño by about December.

I’m afraid this IS a catastrophic level because it has a significant potential to shift the planet into much accelerated warming. Extratropical marine heatwaves will likely amplify greatly and uppermost ocean warming feedbacks could accelerate ferociously.

El Niño Update

Rapid warming of the subsurface plume of El Niño in the eastern equatorial Pacific has occurred since the last image just 5 days ago. Values are approaching + 10 degrees C (+ 18 degrees F) at 70 meters to 150 meters depth 800 km (500 miles) west of the Galapagos. The heat is also expanding to greater depth. And most concerning of all is that heat is continuing to regenerate in the far western equatorial Pacific subsurface waters which should be cooling at this stage of El Niño. If the latter continues we could have a longer duration and possibly even stronger event than the record smashing intensity already predicted.

We have now many bad and worsening signals in the surface and subsurface of the global ocean:

Here in austral mid winter we continue with more warming than cooling of the Southern Ocean sea surface (south of about 60 degrees South latitude) - warming is circumpolar - and we even have significant patchy warming in the rest of the Southern Hemisphere sea surface (first image, 7 day trend).

Then we also have highly unusual subsurface warming in the far western equatorial Pacific (4th image) when it should be cooling as the El Niño warm water plume moves east - meaning this likely record El Niño could be longer lasting and even stronger than the latest model runs predict.

Add to that we have record rates of warming even for summer continuing for many weeks now in large parts of the northern hemisphere sea surface particularly from about 40 degrees North latitude all the way into the Arctic (first image).

And finally, new all time record high Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) were set yesterday both in the Mediterranean at 32.2 degrees C (90.0 degrees F) off Tunisia (fifth image) and in the open ocean of the eastern Pacific at 32.5 degrees C (90.5 degrees F) 100 km off the coast of southern Mexico (sixth image). This is a catastrophe for marine life and in the Mediterranean it will likely strengthen mid latitude cyclones to record levels within a few months and could generate a record strength Medicane. In the tropical North Pacific it will likely further worsen an already hyperactive hurricane/ typhoon season.

There is absolutely no doubt that global warming is accelerating. The global ocean is screaming it loud and clear. If we don’t listen we do so at our peril.

Accelerating warming of the uppermost ocean is an Extinction Level Event.

People have claimed they are fake because the smoke is too high in the sky, despite the fact that wildfire smoke can travel five miles into the atmosphere.

The lack of critical thinking thinking skills, the inability to understand and trust science, the belief that climate change is not real, and the trust in administration that has shown how much they’re willing to destroy to make themselves rich is horrific.

Our planet is dying and we will die with it.

Could we be shifting into a quasi permanent El Niño state? It’s happened before but this time it could happen much faster - like over just the next year.

During the early Pliocene (about 3 to 5 million years ago), the strongest El Niño state was a climate where the ocean was trapped in a permanent El Niño-like condition. Instead of a cycle, the entire equatorial Pacific stayed chronically warm, with surface temperatures roughly 1.5 to 3 degrees C warmer than modern times.

In this period, the usual temperature difference between the eastern and western Pacific shrank drastically. Cold water off South America disappeared. This mimics a modern, extreme El Niño, but it was the normal climate baseline for millions of years.

High carbon dioxide levels and altered ocean currents caused this condition, drastically shifting global weather patterns.

In modern times, the strongest "super" El Niño on record occurred in 1877, causing waters in the ENSO 3.4 region to spike around 2.7 to 3 degrees C above average.

Marine Heat Wave in the Kara Sea of the Arctic Ocean north of Siberia intensifies rapidly with Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies (SSTAs) for the date now of + 8.0 degrees C (+ 14.4 degrees F) in the open Sea (first image) and + 12.8 degrees C (+ 23.0 degrees F) in the lower reaches (second image), up by + 5.5 degrees C (+10 degrees F) in just 7 days. This shallow sea with an average depth of just 120 meters (393 feet) has one of the largest deposits of frozen sea floor methane hydrates in the world.

This is a concerning signal. Equivalent Ocean Heat Content (OHC) is increasing in the far western tropical Pacific north of the equator despite El Niño transferring heat eastward. OHC in the far eastern tropical Pacific north of the equator has actually dropped over the last month while it has increased significantly in the far western tropical Pacific north of the equator. Cross equatorial winds and surface currents have pushed some of the uppermost oceanic heat in the central equatorial Pacific south of the equator. Unfortunately the southern hemisphere graphic has been unavailable since April 30 (fascist fuckery and/ or budget cuts? - I don’t know). Values that we can see in the northern hemisphere are off the charts and exceed 250 kJ/ square cm over vast areas of the tropical North Pacific. Looks like we could have a longer duration record intensity “Super” El Niño than thought.

The recent intrusion of warmer Circumpolar Deep Water under ice shelves around Antarctica is alarming but now we have evidence that these waters are causing melting an order of magnitude faster due to massive channels hundreds of kilometers wide that the warmer water cuts into the underside of the ice which traps warm water and causes overturning that accelerates the melt rate. On top of that these channels weaken the ice structure allowing the shelves to collapse faster. Most alarming of all, the buttressing effect of the ice shelves slowing glacier ice flow into the ocean is thus decreasing much faster.

Sea level rise (SLR) estimates will likely have to be ratcheted up once again. SLR of multiple meters, thought to take many centuries until just a few years ago, could now occur in just a few decades. I wouldn’t be surprised if these predictions again increase significantly because of the accelerating feedback cascade we are now in. These new understandings help explain why the cold surface meltwater (blue region in image, Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies (SSTA) for the date) has rapidly expanded around Antarctica over the last few years. In this case blue is definitely not your best color.

Eastward surface ocean currents now dominate the equatorial Pacific and reach 1.66 m/s in the eastern equatorial Pacific with Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies (SSTAs) for the date as high as + 2.2 degrees C now within the ENSO 3.4 region. The greatest SSTAs are now south of the equator. I think we will see an ENSO 3.4 average of greater than + 2 degrees C (“super” El Niño threshold) sooner than generally predicted - by about June.

“Extreme heat intensity roughly doubles at 2 degrees Celsius of global warming, and quadruples at 3 degrees, relative to 1.5 degrees increase in average global temperatures.” The average 2 meter height air temperature over land in the northern hemisphere has already risen + 2.3 degrees C since pre-industrial times. It will likely reach + 3 degrees C by about 2030 and + 4 degrees C by 2040.
