I spotted these two bees “kissing”, unusually outside the hive. The technical term is trophallaxis - the forager is passing nectar on to another bee, and they are also rubbing antennae to exchange pheromone information about how healthy the queen is, how hungry the brood is, etc.
Turns out it’s much easier to assemble a big box of wax strips when the wax isn’t melting, who knew? Glad we chose to do it today though - the hive was teeming and clearly needed the space; also i got to start off the week with BEES which is an excellent thing to do
On a hot day bees will, like anyone else, find it too warm inside and go hang out by the front of the hive.
You can tell the drones because they’re larger and have enormous eyes, but this one also has a Varroa mite on its thorax. This particular colony is easily strong enough to deal with problem, to the extent we had to add another box today to give them more space.
I try not to damage any of the comb during an inspection but sometimes it’s unavoidable, at which point the cleanup crew arrive, stick their tongues into the spilt nectar, and sit there going shlurp shlurp shlurp until they can take it somewhere else

Modern hive design is based on the concept of “bee space”: any gap much smaller than ~9mm gets filled in with resin; bigger and it gets filled with comb, but a 9mm gap is just enough to let two bees pass and gets left alone. I like it because i get to see their little faces peeping out. Hello bees!
ok, I'm entering Education Crank Mode again: this is a stupid thing to have in a GCSE physics syllabus. The choice of "seven" colours in the rainbow has no scientific basis - Newton chose seven to match a musical scale, because he was a mystical weirdo.
I found the happiest bumblebees I have ever met, inside a huge poppy a few years ago. Just utterly blissed out.
