“I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.” - Stephen Jay Gould
Absolutely wonderful: funny, heartbreaking, deep, light, thought provoking. I started reading it one evening & finally stopped at 3:00 AM because I had to be up at 7:00. Finished it the next day. #Booksky
Somehow JD got the wrong idea about me. I get a steady stream of his lying attempts to flatter me. I assume this approach must work, & if my inbox is any indication the MAGA crowd is drowning in messages like this. If there is a message here, it is how much it matters for people to feel important.
Turns out that it's not just early EV adopters who bought Teslas who are worried about what their cars say about them.
The greeter at my barber is very relaxed about her duties.
Junco babies hatched yesterday & this morning all 4 eggs hatched! As each baby hatches their mother eats the shell. The way she settles on the nest is almost illegally cute. #Birds #Oregon-Junco #NestCamera
Amsterdam, getting ready to bring some building materials home in the rain:
I get a ton of RNC spam, which usually get's filtered out before I ever see it. This one made it through. I was curious & went to look at my spam. It's full of manipulative messages like this, several every day. This is the email diet of the MAGA crowd, it's toxic.
Yesterday on Democracy Now, Amy Goodman spoke with Jeffery Winters about the wealthy disparity in the US today. It's horrendous. If the average rich person was earning $140,000/yr the median person in the US would be earning $1/yr. You can live reasonably well on $140K. You can't live at all on $1.
This gives me hope that our tuxedoed gentleman will be with us for many more years. #Caturday (belated).
Can I brag a bit about our kid? In Scotland there's a start-up called Ember, they provide intercity service to Edinburgh, Dundee, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness & points in-between & beyond with 98 electric buses. Think of how much diesel isn't getting burned... I'm really proud of our kid. ember.to
The focus isn’t great, but you have to love that little one checking out the world. They’re 5 days old today. #Birds #OregonJunco
Found him at Oberlin almost 15 years ago. He agreed to come live with us, he did *not* agree to be an indoor cat. He'd climb the fence & explore. That's hard now & we feared he'd get caught on the wrong side, so I made "portals" he loves to lie in the sun & watch the world. Happy belated #caturday.
Apple Weather this morning. WTF, over? I did *not* ask for Fox "news" in my weather report. Any idea when this started? Any idea if there is a way to make it stop or at least show me Democracy Now or some news source I would like to see?
Male Dark-eyed Junco on sitting on a power line with a caterpillar in his bill. Seeing this is a big boost of enthusiasm for our work replacing our lawn with native plants that support caterpillars. A moment later he brought this to his mate who is with their nestlings who hatched yesterday. #birds
I think the challenges in India (or anywhere else where the demand for a wired infrastructure is growing faster than the resources to build it well) may challenge AI for a while yet. https%3A%2F%2Ftse2.mm.bing.net%2Fth%2Fid%2FOIP.tryVwfTlPiHJd4fEtsY9pQHaE7%3Fpid%3DApi&f=1
In the US any new passenger service is just this side of a miracle (or, depending on who you ask, a sign of our descent into communism), so I (overly, it seems) enthusiastically shared this with my daughter, the transportation nerd, in Edinburgh, and got schooled. For those who might be interested:
Little, absolutely charming book (who knew that it was common for cowboys to knit), available, appropriately enough, for the Seattle Art Museum. shop.seattleartmuseum.org/products/the...
"Our" Juncos are back. They have four eggs in the nest and the female is spending most of her time on the nest now. There is more description in the alt text. #AddBirder
I broke my rule against using AI... I was curious if Grok could make a case that Trump was not a Russian asset. So I asked, and Grok replied: "No response." Apparently Grok is wise enough not to stick its neck out on this one. First sign I've seen of possible genuine intelligence from an LLM...
Just to be clear, he's probably thinking that all of these a part of the US...
