Yesterday was the 41st anniversary of the sinking of the Rainbow Warrrior in Auckland Harbour in an act of terrorism and murder by the French Government. Today I had another dive on the wreck in Matauri Bay, Northland where she sits at 23m depth as a home to fish and marine plant life.

Within days of the opening of the festival, media reports began to suggest that it was faltering. During a heated radio interview, Wellington City Councillor Ruth Gotlieb maintained that it was "every Wellingtonian's civic duty to attend Sesqui."

Pre-ticket sales had reached only 2.4% of targets, and after opening, the $12 entry fee to the festival soon dropped to $6 in a desperate bid to attract visitors.[1] The highest attendance figure was achieved during the final days of the event, when 32,000 visitors took advantage of a decision to waive all entry fees, which were widely regarded as being excessive.

Although planned to run for six weeks, Sesqui 1990 closed after only 12 days, on 7 March 1990, with debts in excess of NZ$6.4 million.[3][4][5]

$I would really like to understand why, when something as viral and tragic as the accident in the Maldives happens, MAJOR media outlets often choose to improvise or speak to people only mildly connected to the event or the sport, instead of reaching out to the true experts. In this case, understanding the key differences between an open-water diver, a cave diver, and a technical cave diver matters deeply. In 2026, experts are easily reachable, and accurate information is not hard to find. Yes, we do not know exactly what happened. But we could at least know what not to say, especially when the information being shared is incorrect and dangerously misleading. The latest narrative about oxygen suddenly “transforming” at 50 meters is as absurd as it gets. It may come from a fraction of truth, but presented this way, it helps no one: not the families of the deceased, not non-divers, not the diving community, and not the locals. Journalism is a sacred thing. Or at least, it should be. We live in 2026. Ask the experts. They are everywhere, and I am sure many would be willing to help. The poor man technically could buy the $5k boots, the problem is he spends his money on drugs, ding ding machines and any other nonsensical items, along with doing the bare minimum work style. Where as the rich man see the $5k boots as an investment that will get him ahead in the long run, the rich man is playing the long game and the poor man is playing the I want it right now can’t wait like a toddler game. The rich man doesn’t buy drugs nor plays ding ding machines, the rich man works 80-100 hrs a week.
The poverty cycle is not one designed by politics, it is designed by the ignorance of the individual its self. The very system we have discourages the type of ignorance that leads to poverty cycle, if the system catered to the poverty cycle like many hope for, the poverty cycle would grow and run rampant and destroy all the opportunities for the rich man, really it should be called the wise man.
The rich man is not rich by luck, the rich man grew rich from 10, 20, 30 or more years of out working, out investing, out educating, out value adding, out wisely spending, out sacrificing short term gratification than everyone else!
