Ed shoots to his feet. “Fuck you, Stede Bonnet,” he strides out of the parlor. A moment later, Stede hears the front door slam shut. The urge to follow him and provide comfort is still powerful even after all these years, but Stede remains in place.
The next thing Stede knows, he’s got his head between his knees, and Jeffrey is coaching him through some deep breaths. “Tell me something you can see…”
“Why’d you say that to him?” Jeffrey asks after Stede’s rewrapped himself in the tin foil and is breathing more evenly.
“I had to try,” Stede mutters. “Had to. He’s not—I can’t—“ Stede stops, trying to grasp at one of his whirling thoughts. “I can’t work with him,” Stede says slowly.

Ed awakens the following morning with a headache and a slightly fuzzy memory of the night before. There was some kind of celebration, with Stede and the crew toasting him, but he recalls that things moved on quickly to the regular story hour rather than remaining focused on himself.
All Ed can remember of the story of the wooden boy is that a fox and a cat tricked him somehow.
Mostly, Ed remembers the urge to flee. To stop preying on Stede’s generosity. He can’t do that, but he can try to speed things along.

Ed is rendered speechless. Sometimes, when he’s alone with Stede, it feels as if time slows down. At these times, Ed never wants it to speed up again. There is a deadline bearing down upon them too quickly, but Ed can almost forget about it during these moments of slow, honey-sweet time.
“Ed? Are you quite well?” Stede’s expression has shifted to concern, and time resumes its regular march.

#WIPWednesday for my RBB with @gaywatson.bsky.social , The Art of Fakery, starting to drop on July 1. Ed is falling but so conflicted 🥺 I wonder how Stede feels… (I am so excited about this, chomping at the bit to share now.) #OFMDfanfic

He remains shy about showing his work. Ed is intrigued by the few glimpses he catches of Stede’s book, but he does not press, knowing very well how sensitive an artist can be about sharing with others.
Ed can’t help but steal glances at Stede as he works, his brow wrinkled with concentration. Ed wishes he could kiss the wrinkles away. He tries to push the thought away, but it’s a stubborn thing, refusing to budge.
Ed longs to capture Stede in the garden like this.
The primroses are in full bloom now, in an array of rich colors. Archie does the heavy lifting when it comes to caring for the plants, but Stede beams with pride when he tells Ed that he planned the garden out himself. Stede even talks to the flowers, wishing them a good morning. Ed laughs the first time, but Stede insists, “They like it when I talk to them! They grow better!” If so, Ed can’t fault the flowers’ logic.
Stede should always be surrounded by flowers. Seeing him like this, calm and relaxed, Ed can’t help but turn from sketching flowers to sketching him surreptitiously on the third day.

“I never should have brought you here,” Stede continues.
“I insisted, mate,” Ed says. “I should have known better. I know what aristocrats are like.” He wanted Stede to have a nice time, so much so that he forgot the basic fact that most of them are dicks.
“Aristocrats,” Stede says thoughtfully. “Hmm, yes.”
“Aside from you,” Ed puts in quickly. Stede is one of a kind.
“Oh, I don’t know about that,” Stede says softly. He looks around. “They do have a nice garden, I suppose. It will be splendid when the roses bloom. Much better than that ghastly ballroom.” He walks to the railing and rests his forearms on it, looking up at the moon. Ed follows suit.
They spend a few moments in companionable silence, and Ed begins to breathe easier.
“I’m sorry tonight hasn’t been what you wanted,” Stede says eventually.
“I wanted you to have a chance to dress up,” Ed admits, keeping his eyes on the moon, which feels safer than looking at Stede’s face. “I forgot that people like them only ever accept me as a tradesman. I’m just not one of them,” he concludes.
“You’re better than they are,” Stede says firmly.”

The brushwork, composition… Could it be? “Mate, is this a Bruegel?” Ed looks up at Bonnet, whose eyes are sparkling with excitement.
“You’ve an excellent eye. Landscape with the Fall Of Icarus. It was unknown until my father bought it from some estate sale when he had business in Brussels.” Bonnet rolls his eyes. “He does have quite an eye, though no appreciation to go with it. The owners didn’t know what they had.”
Ed swears under his breath and stands.
They look at the painting in quiet contemplation for long moments. Something about Icarus there, drowning, unnoticed by the world going by, grabs Ed by the throat. It’s an unusual treatment for an epic subject. The viewer could miss Icarus, especially if they hadn’t known the title of the thing.
“Do you ever feel like you’re trapped, treading water, waiting to drown?” Ed asks before he can overthink it. He looks at Bonnet, who meets his gaze.
“I have very much felt that way, yes,” Bonnet replies.
Ed feels for him. Ed is going to break free, and Bonnet likely won’t, which is a fucking shame

What little daylight there is today is vanishing, but Ed can just make out a figure walking in the garden. It looks like a man with a blond head of hair. It could be the dismal weather, though the rain’s stopped, but there’s something forlorn about the solitary figure moving slowly through the garden.
Could that be the heir? Ed’s pulse quickens. He hasn’t painted a blond man in some time. He’s always had a weakness for them. He quickly turns away from the window. While Ed can’t say that he’s never fucked any of his subjects, it hasn’t happened in quite a while, and Ed cannot afford any messy entanglements now.
