Genuinely happy for all those that had beautiful clear skies for the solar eclipse, but I’m currently enjoying feeling COLD for the first time in ageeees. I’ll take that as a silver lining to the clouds of yesterday! 🥶☁️☀️
I’ve arrived in Iceland as a Cruise Astronomer, ready to see either the total solar eclipse or a cloudy twilight! Making the most of this beautiful country
I'm in Nature! 🤯 Okay, so it may not be for an academic publication, but they described 📡 Radio Universe📚 as “captivating” in their Five of the Best book review! Excuse me while I dance around my living room...💃 🧑🩰 www.nature.com/articles/d41...
An honour to be on Woman’s Hour today, and chat with the incredible women in the Green Room. And so nice to talk about 🔭science🧪 and not just the issues faced by women in STEM.
When you moan SO MUCH that you can’t eat the prop-sweets on set that the BBC send you this… 😳 #noregrets
Classic. The day I stumble in exhausted, hair unwashed, and disillusioned with the world… I apparently do my best work! Science revives me 🔭❤️🥰 watch here: youtu.be/00BL35sKJfY?...
A lady should never leave the house without her meteorites ☄️ #space #astronomy #nerd
The clouds allowed an early night last night (no stargazing for me!) so enjoyed an early morning cup of tea overlooking the lake instead. Bliss.
Camping time! My suitcase is half clothes, half telescopes 🔭 😁 Dwarf II ✅ Binoculars ✅ Astronomy magazines ✅ #holiday #stargazing #astronomy #camping
Radio Universe 📚️ has had a makeover in the US... The Echoing Universe! Same amazing and inspiring stories about radio astronomy 📡 🔭 (we're talking black holes, aliens 👽️, and echoing radio waves solving mysteries in our local neighbourhood 🪐) ... just a different title! Buy now! 🇺🇸 a.co/d/0eaIxnXE
You know when people close their eyes and go to their happy place? 🤩 This is my happy place: The Lovell Telescope, @jodrellbank.bsky.social. Such an honour to stand at the feet of this legend, in front of a sold-out audience of 200, and share my love of the Radio Universe 📡✨
It’s TODAY! Radio Universe is BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week 📚💙 Episode 1 starts with the birth of radio astronomy, when one man heard a hiss in his headphones... 📡🎧 ... the moment we realised we could listen to the universe, not just look at it 🔭 🎧 Listen now: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...
No-one ruin this for me but I think this review headline says I am basically Indiana Jones and I will take that.
“Radio Universe” is out TODAY in the UK. If you want to find out how we use radio telescopes 📡 to uncover ice on Mercury, caves on the Moon, search for 👽 and SO much more please order and review today. It really helps to do it NOW. Thank you friends 🥰🔭 linktr.ee/RadioUnivers...
The women who have made it to the top are exceptional - they’ve had to be. That can be so intimidating. Sometimes, I just want to hear they love reality TV and pigs. Scientist friends… tell me your ‘frivolous’ hobby. 🧬🔭🧪 I’m Emma, I’m an astronomer and I love popcorn and looking at waterfalls.
“Gendered views do not remove with age, especially in physics” - Prof. Louise Archer
“Institutions must Respect, Honour and Reward the communication of science” - Jocelyn Bell Burnell 🔭📡🧪🧬
First panel of the day: Trailblazing Perspectives with Jim Al-Khalili, Michelle Dougherty, Jocelyn Bell-Burnell (omg omg omg🤯), Uta Frith, Ijeoma Uchegbu
I’m at @royalsociety.org for a “Women and the future of science” conference. And yes, I’m wearing my women in science jewellery 💪
This morning I have travelled from Earth to the Moon, Sun, Mercury and Venus, reading the chapters of the Radio Universe audiobook. Next… to Mars!
Writing a grant proposal & it is hard to stay motivated when the proposed funding cuts are so deep. 🔭 I believe in astronomy though. I believe in using the Universe as a laboratory to test our most extreme theories of physics & I know that astronomy helps build up our economies... and our spirits.
So excited to announce Radio Universe is available for pre-order NOW! 🔭 linktr.ee/RadioUnivers... I wrote this as a love letter to radio astronomy and all the incredible science it has achieved: Ice on Mercury 🥶🤔 Volcanoes on Venus 🌋 Blazing Black Holes 🌚 Close your eyes and listen to the skies…
I am on the train to the @royalastrosoc.bsky.social in London, ready to learn about advances in "Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence applied to astronomy' 🔭. Any bluesky friends going too?
So my publishers @johnmurrays.bsky.social just sent me a load of free books from their list and I could not be happier. I mean … free books, right?! Don’t tell them but I would definitely be fine accepting payment in books as opposed to royalties from now on 🤣
I’m taking a day off and heading to Sheffield to see two friends from high school. Incomprehensibly, they have no interest in astronomy, but we share a love of musical theatre, many years of good memories, and we’d do anything for each other 🥰
Inspiring talk by Mayuri Rao, telling us all about the many proposed lunar radio astronomy experiment. My head was especially turned by the “Lunar Crater Radio Telescope”. They want to recreate the iconic Arecibo dish but using a 1-km diameter CRATER on the MOON 🤯🤯🔭 #SALFXI
