Foulques' eyes were wild in a way G'raha had never seen before as he stood, lance drawn and pointed in his direction. The rain was coming down in buckets around them, thunder cracking loudly and echoing through the Shroud. G'raha stood his ground, his staff still on his back as he stared back at his partner.

"Foulques, please," he called, hands raised nonthreateningly. "You know this isn't– Celestaux wouldn't want this," his voice cracked as he said it, the loss still so fresh and making it all worse.

This wasn't meant to happen. Celestaux was never supposed to–

G'raha cut off the thought before he could finish thinking it. Now wasn't the time to get sucked up in his own grief, not when Foulques had already let it consume him. The man who stood in front of him was more of a terrified, cornered animal than anything. A version of him that G'raha had never witnessed… the version of him that existed before Celestaux came into his life.

it's not wednesday, but have a wip because is this maybe also me quietly exploring the Countess Fortemps? who's to say! I just think they're neat!! (cw for mild hanahaki disease related body horror?)

Artoirel had no idea when it began – likely not at least until he was a teenager or just before his final growth spurt, perhaps around then he finally understood that the feelings he had were deeper than just the hormones of young men. It was before his mother died, he was certain of that. He would never forget the mix of stern disappointment and pain on her face when he first time he coughed up the bright red oldrose petals in her presence. That was before he knew of the cloudsbreath and periwinkle that had rooted deep in her lungs, before he saw the plants snake their way up her throat in seek of the light and choke the life out of her.

She was the one who taught him to hide his ailment, to make sure no one ever witnessed his episodes, to hold the petals in his mouth, to swallow them down without making a scene or drawing attention to himself.

Celestaux knew it was meant to be comforting, that Foulques was trying so hard to be of help here, but he couldn't stop the snort that he let out at the comment. "You don't know that," he said, the exhaustion creeping into his tone.

He didn't have to look over to his husband to know that gave him pause. Of the three of them, Celestaux wasn't the pessimistic one – in fact, he was usually the most optimistic of them. He wasn't meant to be the one who doubted things would turn out alright. He and G'raha were always the ones believing, hoping that all would be okay… But now he'd gone and turned the tables and he could already sense Foulques trying to recalibrate, to figure out what to say.

G'raha had his back pressed up against one of the supply boxes that littered the docks while Gwen laid flat on her back, staring up at the clouds in the evening sky and looking like she was trying to make sense of them.

For a few moments, all that could be heard were the gulls above them and the tide rolling in and crashing against the harbor and G'raha wondered if Gwenette had heard him. Perhaps he'd spoken too quietly or worse hadn't even spoken the question that had been gnawing at him aloud.

But then Gwen let out a heavy sigh, one that almost made him feel guilty for asking, and turned her head to rest her cheek against the sun-warmed stone walkways to look over at him. Farim had insisted on going off with Alphinaud and Lyse and M’naago, leaving her behind with Alisaie. He’d brushed it off as her needing her rest, not wanting to bother her, but she knew it wasn’t just that. She knew that it was easier for him to go off healing people on the battlefield than it was for him to look her in the eyes.

But now he was in the middle of where the cannons were firing, in the middle of the carnage. Gwen had never been a great student in school, but she didn’t have to be, not when all the people involved were her dad’s friends, her family. She knew it’d been close, but Alphinaud and Lyse had lived through the war with Garlemald. But Farim wasn’t supposed to be there. Neither of them were.

The snow was coming down harshly, already covering the streets in a thick powder, but he’d never minded the snow too much. He could deal with the cold for a while. If anything, walking around the city when the weather was like this only ensured that he wouldn’t be bothered, hardly anyone would want to be out in the snow when they could stay inside by a fire.

He felt like he was drifting as his legs carried him through the streets, moving completely on autopilot as his mind was clouded with far too many thoughts. Artoirel didn’t know why every year he thought it might be different, that time would make it easier. It never did. There was nothing that could stop the vice-like grip that his guilt had on it, tightening on this day every year. He couldn’t stop the voice in his head that screamed how he should’ve done more, should’ve tried harder, should’ve been the older brother he was meant to be. Thoughts that haunted him constantly only got worse on the anniversary of his death.

And he deserved it, surely. The pain he felt was penance for his sins and he would accept that for as long as he lived.

Because at least he got to live.
