Birds moths islands music sport more birds
103: 46 on a fresh & breezy dawn in Southampton. The undoubted highlight was the 1st, and much anticipated, Fig-leaf Skeletoniser. Also Portland Ribbon Wave & a latish fresh looking Poplar Grey. Only 1 Jersey Tiger though. Maybe they're almost done down here.
1st home trapping for 5 days produced 157:57 in the Southampton trap. Noteables incl Epinotia tenerana nfg & Calamotropha paludella (2nd record & probably drifted up from the R. Itchen). Neither hung around for a photo though so here's a Burnished Brass.
Clear & moony overnight in Southampton. 183:48 this morning incl a whopping 77 Jersey Tigers. Migrants incl 6 Silver Y, Rush Veneer, 2 RDP, 4 Cydia amplana & the 1st Palpita vitrealis for a couple of years.
132:56 in Southampton this morning. A few migrants - D Sword Grass, 3 Small Mottled Willows, RDP & 5 Rush Veneers. The runaway winner of moth of the day was a pristine Garden Tiger. The 1st here for at least five years.
A modest 120:51 on a cool easterly breeze in Southampton this morning. 1st Toadflax Brocade & Dewick's Plusias (2) were noteworthy with Light Crimson Underwing (c.5th garden record) the highlight. #mothsmatter
185:65 in the Southampton trap this morning included a surprising 11 NFY. Highlights incl Italian Bark Moth, 3 Tree-lichen Beauties & Dark Sword-grass. Bracken Gall Moth (Monochroa cytisella) was new for the garden.
1st garden trapping of the week in Southampton after the mega mothing w/e in Kent was pretty productive with 166:64. Jersey Tigers dominated with 27 in and around the trap. Highlights were the 2nd Lobster & 1st Blair's Mocha. #teammoth
13:7 in the Mull trap incl two each of Clouded Buff & Small Angle Shades. ##teammoth
Some away mothing on Mull produced 18:11. Ghost Moth & Map-winged Swift, incl 1 of the gallicus form, were the most noteworthy along with Nutmeg.
Next generation of Toadflax Brocade well on the way in our Southampton garden this morning with 5 caterpillars found and hopefully more to come. #teammoth

A moony and cool night & a smaller catch of 120:46 in Southampton. 6 Diamond backs, 3 Silver Ys & 2 Small Mottled Willows the only migrants. Bucculatrix frangutella new for the garden.
157:54 in the Southampton trap this morning including the 3rd Pine Hawk, 2nd Portland Ribbon Wave & 1st Geoff. Also, what might be Cydia coniferana. 33 Treble lines were also noteworthy.
77:37 in the Southampton garden with Figure of 80 & Cream-bordered Green Pea notable for here. 1 Small Mottled Willow & 7 Diamond Backs the only migrants. #teammoth
1st outing for the MV this yr in the Southampton garden produced 82:42. Broken-barred & Flame Carpets were noteworthy. Also the 1st Stag Beetle of the year hanging out in the flower pots.

46:16 this morning in Cornwall. Migrants were evident with 4 Diamond-backs, 3 Small Mottled Willows, 2 Dark Sword-grass & a Rush Veneer. Also Sandy Carpet which I see infrequently. #teammoth

Dug out the actinic for the 1st time in nearly a month & trapped 10:8 on a cool & clear night in Southampton.
A cracking couple of hours birding in the #NewForest on a misty morning. Lots of activity and a decent dawn chorus. Highlights incl pr of LSWs, 15+ xbills, 12+ Stonechats & Dartford W. Best of all was a Woodcock which silently lifted from a forest stream and jinked off thro the trees. #HantsBirds
A cold & relatively clear dawn on the Hants coast prompted a bit of vizmiggging at Brownwich with 848 birds of 10 spp moving west up to 10:00. 72 Redpolls was a good count for here. Also 250+ Brents offshore. #HantsBirds
1st trap in the Southampton garden for a month produced 30:19. Standard seasonal stuff, but incl the 1st October Swallowtail. #MothsMatter
Great to be back on @skokholmisland.bsky.social after far too long. A Sab's gull on the boat over was great start. Plenty of birds on the move this morning & it feels rare.
1st trapping session in the Southampton garden since 25th Aug was predictably modest with just 43:18. Cypress Pug NFY & Rusty Dot Pearl the only migrant. 4 L-album Wainscots were also quite noteworthy.
Standard fare in the Southampton trap this morning with a modest 78:31. The exception was this pristine Scarce Bordered Straw - only the 2nd garden record. #mothsmatter @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
Back on the Brownwich patch for the 1st time this autumn. Precious few signs of migration but some loafing Meds produced 7 colour rings read. Beast of the day was a Stoat zipping across in front of me. #HantsBirds
Small Heath added to the Southampton garden list taking it to 22 species.
