The Kino Lorber 4K UHD of William Friedkin’s THE HUNTED is honestly one of the most stunning discs I’ve seen. The glorious Pacific Northwest setting looks incredible but also are there two more craggy, wizened, cinematic faces in Hollywood?! Friedkin’s close ups of their faces contain multitudes.
This has been a powerful and awe inspiring and joyful week of movie watching for me, even if one of these things was not like the others.
Revisiting Danny Boyle & Alex Garland’s SUNSHINE. Always loved it, didn’t remember the sheer star wattage. It also looks immaculate still. Cillian Murphy Cliff Curtis Rose Byrne Benedict Wong Michelle Yeoh Chris Evans Mark Stong
Had to break out the Garage Du Cinema to show my daughter THE LAST JEDI for the first time. (Prolly only my third time seeing it?) This is a four quadrant studio blockbuster that simply speaks to me on a pretty profound level.
Have read a few chapters of his book so far and it’s pretty insightful wrt his personal life and story, most of which I haven’t known thus far. Also giving me joy that he’s putting himself out there. Not sure if you saw but this happened for me the other week:
And a journey much longer than intended comes to a conclusion… before I’ve even watched it!
Moved straight into WAR to keep the Li/Statham vibes rolling. Turns out I’ve most definitely never seen this one, though I could’ve sworn I had. Sung Kang is in this! And Kane Kosugi! And Luiz Guzman. And Devon Aoki.
Statham has a disturbing amount of hair in THE ONE. And he’s named Funsch.
“When I see sparks flying, I just feel so much joy” - King John Woo on this HARD-BOILED commentary track. Same, Director Woo, Same.
Philip Kwok is the stunt coordinator for HARD-BOILED and his Mad Dog character is quite possibly my favorite henchman in cinematic history. A fully established terror and man of action, who also has a code. Like 5 lines of dialog and an all-time character is born.
I’ve seen HARD-BOILED no less than a dozen times on many different formats. Watching it on Arrow’s 4K UHD is like a religious experience for many reasons but honestly this new translation is a revelation that makes it like seeing it for the first time. It hits harder and sharper than ever!
I chose the occasion of our 17th anniversary to finally share the news with my non-cinephile / non-geek wife about how excited I am about KING CONAN. She took it well. (Early in dating, I chose Conan as the framing device for just HOW huge of a geek I was to see if she could handle it. She could!)
My @cinapse.bsky.social review of #BeastRace out of #SXSW. This movie had me like:
BEAST RACE ruuuuules. A post apocalyptic sports film from the land of capoeira with parkour elements and savvy character and political dynamics filled to the brim with hot people, energy, & fantastic rules-establishing & world building? Bring me a whole trilogy! #SXSW #BeastRace
