this is exactly it. many of us love the rural places we live and/or are from; we love our neighbors; we love the placeliness of our places; many of us go to/remain in them out of deep commitments to e.g. public education, healthcare, community service, social work. AND:

I have spent many years complaining about rural Arkansas only because I loved living there and think my neighbors deserve better. But when we finally left the second time, I realized how stressful the daily indignities of life there had been. We live in a place now where things just work. The roads are plowed in winter, they’re repaired in the spring, the local utilities text and email us when there are service interruptions and they repair them quickly, we have a well-funded library system.

Personally, I was very happy for AP courses that let me skip out of required college courses that I really really wasn’t interested in taking. These were intro level or in areas I really didn’t want to take such as foreign languages.

I’m not sure that being forced to take a college level foreign language would’ve expanded my college education. I really was not very good at it, but worked hard enough in high school to pass the AP exam in French.

Here is yet another comment on likeness, Lorsung gesturing towards what she describes elsewhere as an 'ethics of simile'; namely how seeing similarity, really seeing it, takes great discernment. Pattern-book is a refreshing reminder of the power of noticing, however small, that which is common, and poetry as itself an act of language-patterning.

Ellen Orchard's very thoughtful review of #Pattern-book in @poetryireland.bsky.social Review 148 (thank you for the tip-off to it, @liamcarson.bsky.social) also notices the similes and their importance to the book.

In this, from the poem 'Simile' in Pattern-book, Éireann Lorsung contemplates the mechanics of one of the building blocks of poetic language. Her approach is elementary and inspired, adjuectives apt for the entirety of this collection. Lorsung offers a fresh approach to what we take for granted in poetry: literary devices like similes, which depend on such small words (like and as) to do so much heavy (metaphorical) lifting.

it's another of these long, serial prose poems that attentive readers will have seen in THE CENTURY ("When I say 'fathers'...) and PATTERN-BOOK ("Everything solid melts into air") and it starts like this:

Water, linen, pale blue flax (from which linen comes) flowering at eleven a.m. (the hour of the ceasefire), dark pink roses (a regular profusion of certain unidentified roses*!) on whitewashed outbuildings seen from a train, body over body lying in the mud of two wars (are we in 1918 or are we in 2018?): and the wind is moving across the train and over everything (interruption after interruption; the mind makes itself a Midas* or did I mean don't worry baby*), and then all of a sudden we pull in to the station as if a magic lantern threw the nerves in pattern on a screen*, between trains going both ways at once like the fancy movement of a horse's legs or a dancer's legs shot on film and played back at 3/4-speed—we have found ourselves in process. This may not be exactly where we intended to be but nevertheless:

it is bewildering to see a mention of my most recent book, in an online books roundup in the Stinging Fly, that includes a quotation absolutely not *from* my book, and indeed not really *about* my book. where did this come from? what is it doing here? did the reviewer read my book? unclear

living where I live is through the looking glass in terms of current events. almost no public shows of solidarity. no one talks to me about events/boycotts etc (I'm new here, not connected, but/and people know I'm from Mpls). I stood in -20 windchill for 20 mins at noon with two paper candles I made

two foot-high paper tubes with circles of cardboard. the tubes are painted white the cardboard is painted a bright gradient from yellow to pink and purple. they look like lit candles. names are written on the vertical candles.

We hang up a seascape we found at a thrift shop for a dollar.
We have been told, the people winning the prizes have the ideas.
We had been brought up like sweet peas on a trellis of such thinking.
When we put the gold floss through our fingers Matt called it philosophy.
He should know. We put the gold floss through language and it was philosophy.
Meanwhile the books have not been sewing themselves.
We have been making the books, by which we mean, the world.
We open the window, we lean out to call through the bluebell haze.
There are the people in their bright dresses, in their silver dresses.
Everyone came into the room: then we were together. Then we could think.
