🦈 Illegal shark finning still takes place on tuna vessels in the Atlantic. Our recent investigation has exposed how the port of Dakar is used as the gateway to the global shark fin trade. Perpetrators can land the fins at port and conceal them without inspection, despite regulations.

🌊 Shark finning is a cruel practice of removing a shark’s fins before discarding it into the sea. They are sometimes still alive and unable to swim, so they slowly suffocate. Sharks are vital for marine ecosystems, yet they are under threat. We must do more to protect them.

Authorities must show that protection measures "actually protect Natura 2000 habitats and achieve the conservation objectives required under EU law. This protection must also be accompanied by a fair transition for affected fishing communities", says Marie Colombier, EJF Senior Ocean Policy Advisor.

3️⃣ Then, we acted. At the public hearing which ended the week, the community showed up as a collective voice against the waterway. In a country as culturally rich and diverse as Brazil, environmental protection is also about strengthening community, celebrating culture, and building hope.

2️⃣ Then, we felt. Corumbá is known as the heart of the Pantanal, and its artists carry the wetland in their work. We gathered on the banks of the Paraguay River for a festival that brought together traditional music, contemporary art, and urban cultural movements in tribute to a biome.

1️⃣ First, we listened. EJF's local team gathered with young leaders and activists in an open conversation circle to discuss what the Paraguay-Paraná Waterway stands for: the devastation of the Pantanal's main rivers and the total transformation of a biome that so many people call home.

Illegal fishing & forced labour are two sides of the same coin. The 🇪🇺 must act. At @europarl.europa.eu, Julien Daudu, Chief Representative in Brussels, laid out what our investigations have revealed: Illegal fishing doesn't happen in a vacuum. It is often part of a vicious cycle of forced labour.

Plastics are littered throughout our environment and bodies, with devastating impacts on planetary and human health. Our current economic system relies on overproduction and maintaining our throw-away, single-use culture. This cannot continue: the shared health of people and planet is at stake.
