His boot toe catches on a crack in the stone. He splatters forward, palms and elbows catching the brunt of his fall. Pain erupts through him, and he shouts for it, the sound taunting him in echo. The tops of his palms are scraped to meat. His knees fucking hurt. Were he not still wearing the huge bracers that had once been the height of fashion for Sharlayan explorers, his forearms would be the sight of several jagged wounds from the stone scattered over the floor.

Blood rolls in a warm rivulet down his cheek. A rock had cut him there, instead.

He lies still — bloodied, shaking, heart a pulsing void of agony — and sobs.

Alone. Alone. She died alone, on a battlefield somewhere, choking to death, silent. He gasps in a breath. He thinks about drowning himself in penitence.

Rammbroes had once said: Forgive us our failures.

Right before he passes out, G'raha thinks: Never. Not in a thousand years.

Eira's knees are curled into her chest. "The Ishgardians believe Midgardsormr will awaken soon."

"And then?" he asks.

Eira slides her gaze to him, almost amused. "That is the question, isn't it."

"The possibilities," he says, grinning, "are many, are they not?"

And what a delightful thing that is.

Eira squints. "He could wake up very angry and decide to destroy the entirety of the Toll."

"He could wake up and open the portal for us. Now wouldn't that be a nice change of pace."

Eira snorts.

"You don't think so?" He loves a challenge. "You're fighting a smile, I can tell."

"You cannot." Her cheeks twitch.

"He could be very pleased with our work," G'raha continues.

"You wish everyone to be pleased with your work." Her tone is the pleasant dryness of wine. "It is why you never cease speaking of it."

"He could wake up and make us Starlight dinner."

Her hand covers her mouth, teeth flashing.

"Or," he says, "eat me for suggesting such a thing."

She bursts into a beautiful bell of a laugh, then — one he files away in his memory like a thousand snapshots of his most favored tomes. She flickers her fingers at him, a playact of spellcasting. "If he wakes at all."

"I shall pray about it, as the Ishgardians are assuredly wont to do."

"They do not wish for it, his waking."

He smirks at her. "I see. Then perhaps we shall never know."

She gazes at him over her knees. Her face is open as the sky, mouth slowly melding to a smile. He has never seen a woman who better embodies the simple truths of twilight.

Eira had short hair in ARR! She cut it when she left her mother to join the conjurers and kept it that way out of spite (Mother insisted on long hair). It gets burned on the ends after Prae, and after that she decides spite is a bad reason to do her hair a certain way lol. #eiralore ; #eirapics

"Eira," he rasps. "You needn't—"

"Hush. Let me look at you."

Air departs his lungs as aether like white-water rapids fills his body. He is the eye of a storm, watching rain and levin shimmer in mist while he floats in a cold lake — and then he is dunked thoroughly beneath its pristine depths.

He gasps again, like he is near to drown. And in the next moment, the sensation is gone, leaving him desperately empty inside.

"I sense nothing…" Eira says, voice quiet and pondering. "But you are clearly in pain."

"Not now I'm not," he stammers out. He presses a hand to his temple as he sits up. Indeed, the agonizing lance that nearly made him wish to vomit has been replaced by a dull version of the sensation one gets when they eat too many ice lollies at once. He will never think ill of her magic again.

She is calmly silent for a long moment before she speaks again. "Perhaps some things should stay closed."

G'raha whirls on her, feet dragging on the stone in a sharp shrk. "No." His fists curl at his side. "I do not believe that. Do you, truly?"

She regards him with an opaqueness that is stunning in its familiarity to the doors behind her. Then she looks away.

"There's something I must know," he insists. "So much might finally make sense, if only I could be allowed…!"

"G'raha."

He will remember the way it sounds when she says his name for the rest of his life. He will remember this as a historian does. He has pored over every moment, and his deep study has revealed that this is the one where things take a proverbial turn.

Her gaze pins him in place — stark and vibrant and sad.

"No matter what you find out," she says, voice unfairly gentle, "it won't change certain things about you."

It's a delusion. But one needs such things to persist.

"Are you disappointed?" she asks. "In what we found?"

G'raha leans back in his chair, arm slinking over the back. He uncurls with nonchalance, a grin about him. "How could I be disappointed?" He lifts his tankard. "I'm going to be able to cross-reference pieces of my thesis for moons."

"We must seal it away. Cid said as much."

"Yes. Well." G'raha waves his hand back and forth. "Certainly. But the notes I will get to take before that! The sights yet to be seen of Syrcus Tower itself…mark my words, I will enter that place myself somehow."

Eira tilts her head. "Finding all manner of monsters awakened did little to kill your optimism."

G'raha smirks. He swirls his tankard. "Has anyone ever told you that you speak with the same verve and pessimism of a dour old wizard?"

There it is. The pinch between her brows, the almost cute puff of her cheeks (a thought he stores away carefully). "Has anyone told you that you are a pompous windbag?"

"I do not care to brandish it about, really."

"Whyever not?" G'raha squints. "You are a hero made."

Her stare is an unsettling thing to be beneath. She reminds him of a raven that knows too much, aware of the many misfortunes upon his path — but then the light in her gaze bends into something catastrophically melancholy. "It's simpler," she says, brittle.

Her voice is so quiet, prone to disappearing on the breeze.

"I think," she continues, "people like me better in robes."

She does not say anything more. She half-stumbles away from him, as if shocked she said that in the first place.

From his place in the following party through the perils of the Labyrinth, he catches glimpses of how she fights. Her aether is the dark twilight blue of setting skies, curling like fire as she leaps into the air with her spear. It shrieks furiously off the ancient stone — an outcry from somewhere so deep that G'raha's blood runs cold with buried longing.

Yayalori Nenelori is a dunesfolk lalafell man with warm brown skin, yellow eyes and pale brown hair. He has a godstone on his forehead and a thick mustache.

Amantius pyr Vitellius is a Garlean man (though I don't have a third eye for him just pretend its there SHH) with dark hair and brown eyes. He has pale freckles and skin, stubble on his chin and scars on his nose and lips.

Whatever timidity G'raha might have assigned to her sloughs away like mist before sunlight. She bears her teeth in a wild grimace and, though she tries hard not to kill anyone, gives the sort of battle shouts that quicken his blood.

So she does have a temper. His heart races with delight. He directs her to the aethersand, flattering her all the while, and he cannot help but grin when she spits in the general direction of his voice. This might be fun after all, he tells himself, no matter how she might feel about him.

He has often overheard that he is difficult, in that heavy way adults often say when they do not want to actually openly insult a child. So he is. But it's that or disappear into the background upon the desire of everyone else, and he won't do that. The world deserves to be seen and recorded and heard and spoken about — and surely, there is a place for everyone in that world. He simply must continue to agitate it, like sifting earth with his hands, to find it.

it's more different than I recalled seeing them side by side BUT I do find the circle chain motif on pre-Empire era Garlean armor interesting! This is the 99 RPR artifact gear and the Praemagitek tank chestpiece. I wonder if it holds particular significance to pre-Empire Garlean culture?
