With the bomb of fatigue I have, I have to choose what I burn my small brief flame energy on each day. Yesterday I chose this.
In a horrific chronic illness crash, with all-consuming fatigue. BUT I was able to check on the garden for 10 minutes today though, and I spotted at least one native green bee (male?), a snowberry clearwing, okra flowers, plenty of winter squash, and a tomato-trashed nest, among the usual spoils.
I hope you’ll read my essay “On Changing Pronouns, with a Mother with Alzheimer’s Disease” on my Substack (themossbyemiliaphillips.substack.com/p/on-changin...). This one means a lot to me.
I’ve been conducting an experiment. I’ve left a copy of my last book Nonbinary Bird of Paradise outside. Today: a slug on “Arcadia.” Next I’d like to inoculate it with mushroom spores.
Sunday morning, in full recovery mode: with AN OPTIMISM by Cameron Awkward-Rich
Up early, with my coffee, & starting to read GREEN OF ALL HEADS by Aracelis Girmay, truly one of my favorite poets
We don’t talk enough about nonbinary transition. It’s been about a month since I’ve been on low-dose T, & I feel SO good on it. I told my partner that I feel better than I have since before puberty.
I’ve been working SO much. Trying to find moments to just rest & so, this morning in bed with my coffee, I am starting KIN: THE FUTURE OF FAMILY by Sophie Lucido Johnson.
My wild Saturday night, with Bo He Moon’s Birthstones in the Province of Mercy (@milkweededitions.bsky.social, 2026)!
Are you a cat lover who has the rare ability to charm a difficult cat who has a history of hiding, hissing, and swatting/scratching? As I prepare to move my mother into an assisted living facility, we need to rehome Lucy, her long-time companion animal whom she adopted as a semi-feral kitten.
UNC Greensboro's Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program is hiring a professional-track faculty lecturer with expertise in critical health studies broadly construed! Check out position # 13903 on spartantalent.uncg.edu.
UPDATE: This big cutie’s people have been found & he has been reunited with them! His real name is Ghost, he’s 11, & he is VERY loved. It was such an honor to get to know him these last couple of days. And I hope he enjoys his new collar & coat too! What an absolute lovebug!
Update on the sweet bully I found: He stayed the night at my friend Elizabeth’s house, & he was the sweetest boy! We’re calling him Wally, short for Walrus, & he’s absolutely the sweetest to humans & other pups! I’m taking him to the vet this morning to get him a rabies shot & get him checked out.
“I don’t know how to see // the world but not to see. How to love the world but to see // one thing completely.” Good morning! I am reading A MAGNIFICENT LONELINESS by Allison Benis White (Four Way Books, 2025) with my coffee.
So proud of all our 1st-year poets & fiction writers who got to celebrate the end of their 1st semester at @mfagreensboro.bsky.social with Arrivals, a reading event at Greensboro Project Space! It’s always such a wonderfully cozy & supportive event. Thanks to everyone who came out ✨
Do you all follow @lenamschmitt.bsky.social's Daybook on Substack? It's my absolute fave. Gorgeous, thoughtful meanderings on art, life, & reading with watercolor illustrations. Honestly, she's so brilliant & I'm so proud she's my friend. Find her at daybook.substack.com.

Made a bouquet & found (what I believe to be) a Goldenrod Crab Spider 🥹 I didn’t realize until I was in the car, well on my way from Greensboro to Durham, & so I did my best to give her an access point back into nature
Thrilled I got to be there tonight to celebrate one of my dearest friends in the world as she launched her first book into the world! Congratulations, Jameela Dallis on ENCOUNTERS FOR THE LIVING AND THE DEAD (@riverriverbooks.bsky.social)!
In my ongoing quest to do things I would have done if I hadn’t been closeted & married in my early 20s, I got my eyebrow pierced
