Most cafes do not allow laptops and it’s less — these laptop people are obnoxious — and more “this is not a space for work, leave that shit at home” There is a strong cultural norm to keep work out of social spaces - because overwork is not tolerated
One final thing — the Dutch believe life is not about work. The Netherlands has the highest percentage of part time workers in Europe. There is a national conversation about burn out and overwork. This is just one of many art installations I saw about overwork and stress.
Flights are expensive, but cost of living in Amsterdam is cheap. Everything felt SO CHEAP while I was there, here’s your avocado toast index - €11.50 (from a spot my friend called overpriced) A tartine / avo toast in Seattle is $18 - 20 (using Cafe Flora has a comparison point)
Third, the Dutch don’t do window coverings or curtains — it’s just not a thing they do. It’s a total thing and a very charming thing to decorate your windowsills for people walking past.
Because — second — it IS the bicycle heaven you’ve been promised it is. I borrowed a bike for a day and it is so fun to bike around the city! It’s normal, practical biking — not an extreme sport like it often is in the US. My friends tell me “soccer mom” is not an idiom, but “cargo bike mom” is
Here’s a few things about Amsterdam I’m taking away from my trip. First, it’s QUIET. Cars are not welcomed in the center of the city, and where cars are welcomed different road materials mean roads are quieter. This is the noise level from a busy square and transport hub, during the daytime.
