Waiting for a late night flight out of Johannesburg after a couple of wonderful weeks in Lusaka and Joburg! I’m so humbled that so many people gave us their time and insight, and it felt so great to be in research mode again - and bursting with ideas. Hoping I’ll be back soon!
Exploring some of Johannesburg and the Cradle of Humankind - an excellent way to spend the weekend.
Back in the Rust Belt for #AAHM2026!! Luckily Buffalo is bringing its best weather 🙂
I never imagined that this beautiful of a view might be part of my commute to work - photo snapped while waiting on my bike under a tree for a spring shower to pass
Hey @durham.ac.uk people and Durham residents! If you like a pub quiz and a good cause, come along to the Station House’s medical mysteries pub quiz on April 19! all proceeds go to the Institute for Cancer Research!!
The Interest in Cattle workshop had a morning outing to Beamish, where we had a lovely time walking around with the Keeper of Animals discussing their current herds (including their shorthorn cattle and Teeswater sheep)!
Life in Durham improved substantially when I realized I could get a really solid cup of vegan chai at basically any time of day
When your D&D group is made up of a bunch of historians and history buffs, you naturally do age of sail homages @robertsuits.bsky.social
Had such an excellent couple of days thinking and speaking about Planetary Health with some brilliant people (and some of my academic role models!). Merci à tous! :)
Surely the dogs we have all the way through our PhD programmes should be conferred the rank of “dog-tor.” At least, we have decided this for Baldr, who was the load-bearing emotional support dog for two PhDs simuntaneously.
Spent a sunny Sunday building some raised vegetable beds in the backyard and cultivating our pollinators 🥰
Had a nice little jet-lagged pootle around Pittsburgh today before my brief stop off at #ASEH2025 tomorrow for the day :)
An exhibition so good that it’s worth being inside on a sunny Saturday!
Had a neat day taking one of my diss students to the archive to look for records of the Sunderland Cholera epidemics. It’s always such a joy introducing someone to archival research for the first time!!
Sunrise on Ushaw House, where we’re kicking off day 2 of our Environmental Heritages and Futures of the North East Conference!! Such a privilege to be surrounded by such amazing community and research projects about this stunning region
Friday visit to my favorite Environmental History Lecturer at UCL 😊
Fall looks good on you, Oxford. Feeling very grateful that I get to spend this lovely season as a @bodleianlibraries.bsky.social fellow. Get in touch if you’re around Oxford and want to meet up!
Good morning, Helsinki ❤️ thanks for such a gentle wake-up. Time for our last leg of the journey to Oulu!
@robertsuits.bsky.social and I are at St Pancras bright and early today on our way to @wceh2024!! Why so early, you ask? Because we decided to go by TRAIN! Over the next three days, we’ll be on sleeper trains, regional trains, and even a ferry or two as we head to Oulu. Wish us luck!
So honored to be giving a talk at and participating in the One Paleopathology Workshop here at @DurhamU34989 over the next couple of days. I can barely contain my excitement at all the amazing interdisciplinary research!
Once again in my happy place at the @ExploreWellcome library, distracting myself from my familiar frustration of not *immediately* feeling better after a medical procedure. Fittingly, reading about C diff infections two days after a gnarly colonoscopy.
So excited to be in Oxford for the next six months to live that academic hermit life and finish up some projects (and do a LOT of walking)
Back in the UK after a whirlwind tour of the US attending my favorite conference, seeing an eclipse, saying a final goodbye to one of our most loved and admired people, and then hiking for a couple of days. Now…to jump right back in! 😂😂😭
It’s hard to convey how wonderful and energizing it is to get to spend weekends visiting places I’ve been reading about for years, that form the basis of how I understand the UK, industrialization, and environmental change - this weekend, it was Sunderland.
The views certainly make the hills worth it…what a pretty part of the world we live in. #settlehalfmarathon
Still can’t believe I can be in London (and my major archives!) in a little under 3 hours and one train.
