Art is resistance because it’s what we do when the state is trying to scare us into silence.
When armed federal agencies can shoot people in the street, when detention expands from immigrants to anyone who stands too close or speaks too loudly, the goal isn’t “public safety.” The goal is obedience. They want us isolated, whispering, second‑guessing ourselves, hoping we won’t be next. They want a country where the only acceptable reaction to state violence is to look away.
Art is how we refuse that training.
A poem, a poster, a mural, a chant, a song—these aren’t “expressions.” They’re signals. They tell the truth in public. They name what happened and who did it. They make grief and rage legible, sharable, repeatable—so people stop feeling alone and start moving together. Art turns fear into coordination.
We’ve seen this before: abolitionist broadsides and spirituals that carried survival under slavery; anti‑lynching songs like “Strange Fruit” that forced the lie into the light; ACT UP’s graphics that turned mass death into mass pressure; street murals that make a killing scene impossible to scrub clean. When power escalates, art helps ordinary people escalate toward each other—toward witness, mutual aid, protest, and protection.
Because the alternative is exactly what they’re counting on: hiding in our attics, waiting quietly to be found. I’m not doing that. Make something. Put it where people can’t unsee it. Then show up.

$Aereth Yurren is not a woman the modern Vulsrians were ever meant to understand. She is Aften-born—shaped by the old ways beneath Mt. Kaaldor, where dire wolves still run and the gods feel close enough to touch. The Aftens, descended from Aften Oakheart, “The Wolf of the Gods’ Armies,” are seen by modern Vulsrians as brutish, uneducated relics. Yet in the shadow of Kaaldor, they remember a different truth: it was Machius who betrayed them, not the other way around. Aereth grew up in Lord Korath Warfeather’s harem in Fenros, one of nine children raised to compete for his favor. She did not simply survive that world—she dominated it. Korath named her his Lunar Daughter, sensing in her the same dormant, feral energy that once defined Aften himself. Through fear, intimidation, and raw charisma, she became the pride of her father and the terror of her siblings. While other daughters prepared for marriage, Aereth hunted with her father, ran with the wolves, and swore to keep Kaaldor free from the encroaching “modern cousins” in Oderia. She learned the land, the winds, the moods of the mountains. Her loyalty was not to empire, but to blood, territory, and the old gods. When Emperor Chyleon stumbled into her territory on a doomed hunt, Aereth saw more than a trespasser—she saw an opportunity. In him, she felt that same coiled power, a sign from the moon-god Ziranos. Their union was never just romance; it was strategy, instinct, and prophecy colliding. She took him into her bed and then into her world, binding the old blood of the Aftens to the imperial line. To the court, she was a scandal. To Kaaldor, she was a shield. Aereth is the bridge—and the fracture—between the ancient wild Vulsria and the polished empire that tried to tame it.$

Her eyes were wide—silver like starlight, confusion and dawning recognition warring in them as she took in the tall, dark‑haired man in travel‑stained finery standing where she had expected a common man. Immediately, she fell to her knees, bowing her head in genuflection.
“Y-your grace.” she breathed, the title scraping out of a suddenly dry throat.
Her heart hammered against her ribs, wild and panicked, as if it, too, were trying to throw itself at his feet.
She did not dare look up. She stayed there, spine rigid, hands pressed to her skirts to keep them from trembling, every muscle strung tight with shock, confusion, and a kind of terrified awe—waiting, as subjects were meant to wait, for his command.
Lermesian did not answer. Could not. Whatever careful words he had once imagined for this moment—explanations, apologies, reassurances—had been burned out of him somewhere on the road between Aereth City and Kenwyte.
He crossed the distance between them in a few long strides.
He took her hands in his, fingers closing around them as if to prove she was real, warm, alive. For a heartbeat he only held them, staring down at her with a hunger that had nothing to do with power and everything to do with the year he had spent living on ink and the memory of a girl in a flowered field.
“Imare,” he breathed again, reverent, almost disbelieving.
Then he pulled her to him and kissed her.
There was nothing tentative in it. No courtly preamble, no careful negotiation. His mouth found hers with a fierce, pent‑up need that had been building with every letter, every unopened gift, every night he had imagined this and forced himself to stop. Her hands, trapped between them at first, curled instinctively into the front of his coat as the world narrowed to the press of his lips, the heat of his body, the wild shock of being claimed and cherished in the same breath beneath the indifferent, watching moon.
