Just finished "Tehanu" by Ursula K LeGuin. This is a master storyteller who is not willing to just give us what we may think we want from EarthSea, and instead enriches the world by considering how ordinary lives can hide the most extraordinary people. A dark but brilliant tale. #BookSky

Just finished "The Farthest Shore" by Ursula K. LeGuin. The world of EarthSea is in peril, as Ged and a young Prince seek the source. On their way, the boy will learn about many things, including living, and dying. I love how these stories seem so simple, yet run so deep. #BookSky
Just finished "The Long Shoe" by Bob Mortimer. A cosy, quirky story, very much in the same vein of his previous books. If you know Bob Mortimer's stuff, you know what you are in for. Or actually, you don't. #BookSky
Just finished "The Tombs of Atuan" by Ursula K LeGuin. A very different story of Earthsea. A young girl is born into power. But the deceptively readable story slowly reveals that "power" can mean many things. Loved this, almost feel like reading it again straight away. #BookSky
Just finished "A Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula K LeGuin. A wonderful tale of a boy's quest to conquer his demons, this is beautifully written. LeGuin's ability to create worlds that are original is breathtaking, as we journey across Earthsea buoyed by the choices of a young magician... #booksky
Just finished "Heartstone" by C.J. Sansom. Once I start these, I can't put them down. The level of historical detail really draws you into the England of Henry VIII. The characters are brilliantly drawn to life. The mysteries at the centre of this book had me guessing all the way through. #BookSky
Just finished "Babel" by R.F. Kuang. I knew little about this going in, apart from it being set in an alternative nineteenth century Oxford. There is an element of magic, but the brutal reality of our world history underpins this tragic tale. Don't expect Harry Potter... #BookSky
Eldest moved out of her student flat today. Still needed time to pack, so I had time to myself. Took a walk to my favourite view in Sheffield. Then walked back through leafy suburbs and cemeteries. Miss this city. #Sheffield

Finished "Downward To The Earth" by Robert Silverberg. A dark story of seeking redemption through rebirth on an alien world. The influence of Conrad is strong. However Silverberg builds a unique world of his own, more Cronenburg and Kubrick than Coppola. #BookSky
The Helliconia Trilogy by Brian Aldiss. Better than Game of Thrones by far. Winter really is coming... #BookSky
Another enjoyable Tudor murder mystery from CJ Sansom finished. I love the way you feel you have stepped into sixteenth century London with these. #BookSky

Started this yesterday afternoon, and could not put it down. Never seen the TV show, but the books keep popping up at 99p on Kindle. Loved the slow burn intro, letting you get to know the world and the characters before the plot seems to really change gear. Can see why the show is a hit. #BookSky

Current reading. These "experiments" from Wyndham remind me why I loved short stories as a kid. I love Wyndham's understated storytelling. And for #MathsTeachers, the use of compound interest in "Dumb Martian" was nice ( and the story is very satisfying). #BookSky #SciFi
Playing Taxi tonight as DD is at the Louis Tomlinson concert in Birmingham. Found a beautiful Indian restaurant literally tucked between pubs and clubs, with a window over the canal. All human life is here, almost. #LifeIsGood
Just finished listening to this from the BBC, the story of the Cuban Missile Crisis from the perspective of Kennedy and Khrushchev. Absolutely fascinating and makes you want world leaders who understand the implications of their words and deeds. And have empathy. And read.... #history
