A #painting not of Ireland. "Girona" was one of the many paintings I did on my third and final annual 24-hour live-streamed painting marathon over on the other place back when more of us were happier online. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #Scape

Portrait format in acrylics on mat board. View inside a rectangular stone roofless ruin, possibly a chapel. Five benches either side of a central aisle are facing the far end where from a raised platform a single tree grows. There are 2 arched openings in both of the walls to the side, presumably for windows, and a small arched opening with what might be a gate low down on the far back wall behind the tree to the left. Overall colour is pale pinks and yellow and blues, with individual stones suggested by horizontal marks of blue and red and purple and yellow and orange and white. Inside the arches is predominantly a dark purple colour with individual stones suggested by marks of red and blue and green. The benches are very loosely painted horizontal long strokes suggestive of wood, rendered in purples and blues and some yellow and red, with blue support framework at the ends of each bench. The edge of the platform is a deep blue white its stop id white and a few steps lead up to ir from the right edge. The tree is dark and contrasts against the pale back wall. It has a twisting tall trunk partly outlined in purple with green inside but then changes to ochre and blue and orange until just before it reaches the top of the ruin it splits into three twisting branches, one which is a dark purple and blue, and the other two being white outlined with blue, and all of them standing out against the painterly yellow-orange of the sky. A smattering of bright green foliage runs across the branches. The photograph was taken before I signed the painting.

"Souvigny-en-Sologne", another older #painting. One very hot day in France, when on my cycle to Istanbul, I cycled 195 km (121 miles) from just west of Orléans through the Sologne to south of Nevers. Over the next few years I painted this moment from that day. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #UrbanGaze

Landscape format in acrylics on watercolour paper. Junction in French village with a street going to the right off a street which runs to the left. On a small green between the two streets is a large tree with a spherical Afro mass of foliage, yellow on the right and blue in shade on left, a very dark shadow below on left of its dark brown wide trunk and spilling off the green onto the road. Street surfaces are pink-red, brushed in the direction of the streets. At the front of the green closest to the viewer is a white directional sign against a green box or bush on the ground. Low small dark green bushes punctuate the further corners of the little green. A low-roofed building is immediately behind the tree. Church and steeple peeps out above and behind on right, and two-story buildings continue down street, with very dark bold shadows from other side on right. Roofs are red, and pale pink, buildings are earthen with one grey one down the end of the street on the right. The sky is blue into aqua. Signed top right in dark blue, L Daly '97

A Dublin #painting, "Wellington and Essex Quays" I painted after enjoying a sunset walk in town one evening. This is how those quays looked as viewed from across the Liffey with the evening sun throwing Parliament St and the usually green Grattan Bridge into dark shadow. #Art #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Panorama format in loose acrylics on canvas, mostly in shades of yellow, pale red, and black. Diagonal view across river. Bottom strip is silhouette of straight bridge with traffic and features. Buildings are 4 and 5 stories, with those to the left, including the Clarence Hotel, being pale red with yellow and black details, and those on the right, including the Italianate Sunlight Chambers with its narrow double arched windows and faience bands beneath first and second floor windows, are yellow with red and black details. Roofs are black. The gap between the buildings on the left, which are on Wellington Quay, and those on the right which is Essex Quay, is the beginning of Parliament Street which the bridge in shadow leads to. What little we see of Parliament Street from the diagonal view-point is mostly in black shadow extending to the full height of the buildings. Sky is smoky yellow. A smattering of highlights are in white, a few windows towards the right edge have a touch of blue. A #painting of #France for no reason. "Approaching Grenoble" is the view I first had of the Alps on my cycle to Istanbul. I'd come from Saint-Étienne that day, and wondered how I would cycle over the blue wall in front of me as I made my way to Italy and onwards. #GoodTimes #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

A #painting based on a scene a few minutes walk from my door. "Birds, Wires #14" the 14th in my ongoing series of birds and wires. Like all of them I painted it because of my love of birds, wires, and the spaces between them. It has 15 birds in it, just to mess with people. #Art #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Wide landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Against a painterly bright turquoise background are three very dark blue (almost black) wires fairly close together running across the painting upwards to the right. On the middle wire are 5 birds in various poses, with one alone at the left end, and the other four close to the right end, the middle 2 of which are right beside each other. On the top wire are 10 birds, with a pair left of centre facing left, then a group of 4 in the centre facing right, with one by itself facing left, and then 3 together at the right edge and facing different directions. On the bottom wire are no birds. The birds are all starlings and silhouetted in the same very dark blue that's almost black of the wires. In isolated spots the wires and birds have very slight fringes of red. I took this photo of the painting before I added my signature.

A Dublin #painting "Poolbeg, Kayakers". The first of two versions I did of a view of two people crossing Scotsman's Bay. I watched planning how I would paint it, then drove my eyes mad by painting morse code sparkles on the water before painting between the marks. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #TidesOutTues

Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. A painting of two halves. The bottom is the a bay of pale blue and the top half mostly sky of yellow with dark features and details along the horizon. Two kayaks in bottom right quadrant, one blue and one to its right yellow, make their way across water that is heavily dappled with sunlight in pale cream dashes and dots, towards the back of a pier running horizontally across the centre of the picture. Beyond on the left, rising up from a cluster of dark blue buildings, are two tall chimney stacks with their top halves of red and white bands set against a yellow-orange sky, and their bottom halves a cold grey green of unpainted cement. Just to their right, almost in the centre of the painting, are 4 smaller narrow chimneys of grey green, with two of them slight higher than the other two but reaching no higher than half the height of the main red and white banded chimneys. To the right of them, and continuing to the right edge of the painting, peeping over the pier are white boat masts mixing in with white lamp-posts and set against a pale blue band of distant trees and/or buildings along the horizon. Upper section of pier rear is dark blue with lighter blue isolated stones and the odd red or orange one, and lower section of the rear of the pier is a band of rip-rap in navy and violet with light blue and dark orange rocky highlights. Another west of Ireland #painting. "Coastal Connemara II" came out of my fascination of what the Atlantic Ocean does to our coastline, the shapes it makes as it weaves in and around features. So I painted it. #ArtYear #SpéirGhorm #Art

Landscape format in painterly acrylics on mat board. A coastal scene simplified into simple shapes of land, sky, field, water and sky, with uneven dark blue or black outlines between shapes. Sky is band of quarter and rendered in smudgy yellows, and whites with touches of grey. It is pierced only by the conical orange peak of a stand-alone mountain by the right edge. In front of the mountain and across horizon is rich blue of sea, which also populates another inlet on the left and two small lakes in the upper centre of the picture. A white cottage with a slate roof of violet and dark blue dots for 3 windows and rectangles of 2 doors, sits near centre closer than the 2 small lakes and on edge of a dark green rectangular field in the mid ground. All land behind and around the cottage is rendered in shades of horizontally brushed orange, with the pale grey gable of another cottage or outbuilding to the left. To the right of the rectangular dark green field is a bright lime field. Another dark green field adjoins the one in front of the cottage and runs diagonally across the whole width of the bottom of the picture. An eastern Ireland #painting now. "Wexford II" was the second of three times I painted the Crescent Quay of the beautiful southeastern town. I have a larger painting of elsewhere in the town in progress, but it's been on the go for about 15 years and not quite ready yet. #Art #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Landscape format in very loose sketchy acrylics on Matboard. Quayside showing three buildings, each two stories. Left to right they are orange, blue, and green. The two buildings on the left both have slate roofs rendered in orange. A dark narrow steeple rises behind between them against the canary yellow painterly sky. The bright blue building which is the central one, faces out from a gable end with a door in its centre of which there is a window either side. Above the door is an orange band and above that is a row of 5 small squares, three of them windows with 2 signs in beteen making it look like 5 windows. Above them is an orange circle up in the top corner of the gable. Five short poles rise up from the front of the slopes of the gable, loosely painted with flags hanging down on them. From our angled view across the quay we see the shadow side of the blue building which is a darker blue and long. It has several orange windows and signs on both stories with the band separating them rendered in lilac. The green building on the right is the largest of the buildings. It has arches around its central door and long window to its left. There are three large narrow windows in the upper story with a narrow central band of purple and orange which has two banners hanging down crossing it to reach either side of the top of the central door arch Its roof is flat with a slightly higher central third. In front of the buildings are a line of several white bollards above a quay wall of purple-grey, except for the leftmost third which is a very dark blue and red. The water in the foreground is red and pink with some very dark blue reflections. Dark broken lines edge much of the features and details of the buildings. A west of Ireland #painting. "Benbulben II", as you might guess, was my second time to paint the iconic County Sligo mountain. I haven't stopped painting it but there are other mountains - there are even other mountains in Sligo. Am hoping to get back there next month. #Art #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Leaving my native Ireland for an American #painting. "Elevator Sunday". Once upon a time I cycled on this road in Nebraska. It was very similar to many other roads I cycled on in Nebraska. And in Kansas. And Texas. And Oklahoma. So I painted it, like it was all of them. #Art #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

A grain elevator made up of over a dozen white concrete cylinders joined together in a line, is on the left of the painting running to the centre where it gets further away. To the right of it is an area of orange grass separated from it by a dark channel of a railway track with telegraph poles at intervals alongside. Each pole has three short cross-pieces at its top. On the right edge a road rendered in deep blue disappears straight ahead where it passes another white grain elevator further away, and some trees. Parallel with the road on one side and the railway track on the other we see just the end cylinder of the elevator, with all its other cylinders directly behind it. Elevators, their cylinders, the telegraph poles, the thre dark green tree clumps in the gaps along the horizon, are all outlined loosely in the same deep blue of the road. A Dublin #painting, "Arran Quay, Liffey Steps" I painted because I love our capital city's quays, and the western end of this north one I've painted several times. #scape #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. Under a smokey yellow sky is a terrace of six 4-story buildings, with a side street at the left edge and cropped at the right edge. Buildings are narrow being two window bays wide, with dark shopfronts at street level. All are red brick save for the left end building which is white with red corner bricks, and the 3rd from left which also has white upper stories. Shopfronts are mostly black, with some blue and white, and some red and yellow details. Readable names include "Voodoo" on two fascias and "Inkwell Tattoo" on the fascia of the central white building. Just above the Voodoo fascia between the two windows a clock projects out from the red bricks. Windows of upper floors are all narrow and are rendered as blue - or black where open - with pale frames and sills. Roofs are like blue hats, and the two leftmost have white arches in front of dormer windows. In front of buildings is river wall of blue-grey-green granite with white steps in centre down to the left past a low band of green clinging seaweed to the water of very dark and dirty blue and violet. An older #painting. "Letter Home" I started in a time when I wrote and received letters (paper, ink, that sort of stuff). It was prompted by a classic Irish postage stamp (which was designed by Heinrich Gerl based on an element on the back of the Killamery Brooch). #SpéirGhorm #RedWed #ArtYear

Landscape format in very loose painterly acrylics. On a background of varied reds (with orange, alizarin and white mixed in), is a stylized dog of yellow panels. Dog is facing left but head is turned around backwards to the right holding its tail in its mouth. Yellow panels are loosely outlined in broken dark blue and do not touch each other. Body is three narrow horizontal panels. Rear hip is a circle. Front hip a bell. Neck is two panels, head three, front leg four and rear leg three. 15 years ago today I set off on my bicycle for a 3,000 km cycle painting tour of Ireland visiting people from the internet. I've the guts of a book about it written though still a way to go. Life's been kind of different ever since, but here's a little memory of that wonderful summer. #SpéirGhorm

Collage of 40 landscape format photos, in 5 rows of 8. Several have my extended long bicycle with painting equipment and sometimes with me, in scenes all around Ireland. Others are iconic shots of mountains, bays, lakes, fields, hills, cliffs, and beaches. Cows, a sunrise, a thatched cottage, a dry stone wall, and a pub sign also feature. Recogniseable locations include Slieve League, Wexford town, Clew Bay, the Burren, Galway city, Connemara, Portrush, Passage East, and Knosknarea.

A Cork city #painting. A couple of years ago I took the train down to the southwest of Ireland to deliver a large painting on canvas. I had nearly an hour to wait for my lift so I walked through to the river and sketched the view before the rain or my lift came. #SpéirGhorm #UrbanSketching #ArtYear

Loosely sketched in ink lines, watercolours, coloured pencils and white gel. A Dublin #painting "Grattan Bridge, Four Courts" is one I did based on so many bus journeys home from town - where I'd be sitting upstairs (because my knees used to work then), heading west along the quays into the setting blinding sun towards a teapot. #Art, #SpéirGhorm, #ArtYear

Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. Under a canary yellow sky we look diagonally across a silhouetted River Liffey wall and the metal lattice-work rails and stone arches of Grattan Bridge, west at the quay on the far side (north) and the column-supported dome of the Four Courts rising behind it. Bridge rails are red and through the lattice we see the surface of the bridge in yellow. Through the bridge arches below the water is a very pale green-grey. All buildings are dark shades of teal and blues in hints of windows and in shadow in the lower parts where they blend into the darkness of the river wall and trees along the far quays. Upper parts of buildings being paler shades of teal and blue. Flecks of red feature throughout. I took this photograph before I added my signature.

A different sort of #painting for me. "Dirty Feet" was one of the paintings I did in the 2nd of my 3 annual 24-hour live video-stream painting events I did when I was online in that other place. This was one of my favourite ones that came out of that long 24 hours. #Art #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Landscape format in painterly acrylics on mat board. View of the soles of a child's two feet sticking out from under a blanket. The blanket is cream with spaced out maroon stripes running horizontally such that they undulate as the blanket rises over the legs falls again on the other side. The stripes alternate between a wide ribbon and a double narrow stripe. The surface the feet are resting on occupies the bottom half of the painting. It is wood, rendered in orange with slightly wavy wide painterly yellow lines and narrow blue lines, all parallel and showing the grain including swerving around a blue knot at the left edge. The feet are a peach colour including the part of the left shin that is visible, but mostly the soles, representing their dirt, are covered with green paint with some alizarin smudged in. Each toe is outlined in blue as is the whole shape of the rest of the foot. It is the same blue as the narrow blue lines of the wood grain running slightlu sloping left to right. A #painting from the north west of Ireland. "Croaghloskey" was one of those scenes I bumped into every day when I lived with a little dog in a big landscape where every cottage we walked past was populated with an old man and a dog. This is our place, I would say to her. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #Art

Landscape format in acrylics on mat board. A largely purple and turquoise feel off this depiction of a hill with a patchwork of fields on it. Bottom third of painting is a field in the foreground of a mess of broken teal and rust and purple strokes, mostly short horizontal ones but for along the very bottom where there are vertical ones suggestive of grass. At the far side of the field is a dry stone wall of pale grey stones, running slightly diagonally down from left to right as it undulated gently. Past it is the hill, flat topped with its bottom slopes on both side cropped at the edges of the painting. It has a dark diagonal hedgerow running from the bottom left up to the right edge halfway up the height of the hill. On the near side is a ploughed field of diagonal purple and a alizarin lines running perpendicular to the hedgerow, with a solid purple-grey triangle in its bottom left corner. On the far side of the hedgerow cut out of the rust of the hill are 8 fields of various greens and blues randomly arranged with dark outlines of varying thicknesses. A west of Ireland #painting. "Through a Burren Wall" I painted because I love walls, especially walls of stone. Like love them so much I can spend hours looking at them. And this one was easy because there was a big hole in it that let you see the view - of fields of stone. #Art #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Anyway, we go on. A Dublin #painting, "Heuston III" I painted because I love train stations and the areas around them. This was my 3rd time I painted the main station for trains to the west of Ireland with the bridge that shares its name. And a bonus Luas for tram lovers. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #Art

I lost a friend yesterday. Sometimes you pause just to keep people alive longer, even if only for seconds. Here's a little sketch I did one day in Liverpool on my way to visit him. It's the Walker Gallery and the Stebble Fountain.

A Dublin #painting. Back when the world re-opened I got to go into town, and outdoors have a meal, a pint, and touch another human being, all for the first time in almost a year. Before meeting her I sat on Rosie Hackett Bridge and did this sketch. #ArtYear #UrbanGaze #SpéirGhorm #UrbanSketching

Sketchbook turned sideways to facilitate landscape orientation sketch. In loose watercolours, inks, and acrylic paint pens: corner where O'Connell Bridge (running horizontally) and the Boardwalk (running diagonally from bottom right corner) meet with bottom end of O'Connell Street. 2 trees in full bright green foliage on Eden Quay on right, and on far side of bridge on Bachelor's Walk towards left edge of painting. Bridge and river wall stone is yellow, river is dark blue, tree trunks are dark brown and purple and twisted, foliage shadows are in blues and purples while highlights are in yellow. "Skerdagh School" Once upon a time I sat in the Mayo sun #painting this house after a couple of idyllic days staying in it with a wonderful family. Square painting in acrylics on mat board. Somewhere like the south of France. Top half is sea and sky. Sea is turquoise short rippling horizontal strokes of a mid blue, pale green and white. There is a dark blue horizontal shadow close to the horizon, and white surf halfway down the picture where the water meets the beach. Heads and torsos in the water indicate bathers. Sky is pure blue, paler closer to the horizon, with no more than hint of faint clouds. Bottom half of picture is all arranged dozens of royal blue and white striped umbrellas, and white deck chairs rendered in blue shadow. Long grey mats make 2 paths through the umbrellas and deck chairs to the water's edge, Foreground is deck, rendered in orange and yellow horizontal stripes, with white round table and white chair underneath a square cream umbrella. Landscape format in painterly acrylics on mat board. Horizon is in centre. Bottom is water, rendered in shades of maroon with, increasing the closer to viewer, light purple and light blue highlights. Top half is sky of pale yellow and white mixed with very small amount of purple lower down, and some ochre touches. The island, almost reaching both the left and right edges of the painting, sits on the horizon in light blue with a thin red outline, including a steep flat-topped mountain on the left and a jagged tail stretching out to the right. In a slightly darker blue, the isalnd has a lower down more rounded hill directly in front of the mountain and the hill also has a long tail lower in height than the long jagged tail behind it. A west of Ireland #painting "Clew Bay #3" is one of a series of miniature paintings I did. There were several views of the County Mayo bay in the series, because every view of it is ridiculous. Annoyingly though, people always want to tell you they know a better view. Ha. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #Art

Landscape format in painterly acrylics on card. Dark, almost black, outlines of all the shapes in the painting, which within those outlines are very painterly. There are foreground orange and green fields, green islands in a light blue bay, and blue mountains, headlands, and islands on the far side of the bay along the horizon. Sky is white and blue brushed loosely into each other creating large smokey clouds and where broken showing orange under-painting. A small white cottage with dark grey roof and white chimney nestles in bottom right corner in green foreground field, whole a large orange piece of land slopes up from there to the left edge of the painting. Another cottage is barely perceptible on the right of a green island in the bay, behind a smaller island which is little more than a low green-topped stack. A hill-shaped grey-purple island is directly behind the one with the cottage, while two more green islands, also hill-shaped, are stacked to the left. The yellow edge of a beach creeps in from the right edge a bit behind the cottage island. The landmasses on the horizon are all steep peaked and blue. Portrait format in acrylics on mat board. On a painterly orange background a jack russell terrier is sitting up in the centre of the picture facing the viewer. He has a white body, rendered in loose large strokes of white, cream, and very pale grey-green. He has a mostly black head but a little white mostly on the right of the end of his snout but touches above both eyes and on the other side of the end of his snout, and brown also, mostly down the left side of his face. His ears are very large, perhaps his stand out feature. They are pointy and proud, and mostly black with dark blue and touches of brown. He has a dark collar just about visible where not covered by fur. A patch of warm creeps over his shoulder from the right side. Just two paws are visible, and little more than simple strokes of off-white with touches of narrow strokes of blue indicating shadows between toes. I took this photo before I added my signature.

A Dublin #painting "Four Courts, Four Trees" is a piece I painted in various water based media. Walking and cycling the quays of Ireland's capital city is something I've done a lot my whole life so the buildings along the Liffey appear in my paintings frequently. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #GreenSat

Dome is green, small columns supporting dome, and large columns supporting the portico below in the centre of the picture, are white. Brickwork is warm grey with touches of yellow ochre; the shadows behind columns and the slate roofs of the rear wings either side, are blue. Trees are spaced out and in full green foliage with yellow highlights and dark trunks that all lean slightly to the right. River Liffey wall is olive brown with blue shadows from trees above, and is topped with balustrade. River is streaks of browns and greens. Signed bottom right in ink line, Liam Daly
