Edward Hopper’s “Automat” at the Des Moines Art Center was the first painting I really spent time with. When I realized that consuming an entire museum was a completely bombarding and overwhelming experience, this was the first painting where I just stood there and experienced it.
In February, I visited Memphis for the first time. With reverence and all the heaviness it entailed, I visited the National Civil Rights Museum, the hotel where Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. We have so much work to do.
