Summer Halftime Report: Today (July 15) is the halfway point of Meteorological Summer. June was an unremarkable month temperature-wise; July has been hotter-than-average so far. Rain has been a bit below average, at least at the YNG airport.

Smoke from those central Canadian wildfires may become more of an air quality problem for our area by Thursday, as the high altitude smoke makes its way closer to the ground.
Wildfires quickly blossomed Monday across southern Ontario, near Lake Superior. Some of the high-altitude smoke from these fires has drifted southward and will make for a somewhat hazy appearance to our sky today, especially this morning.
See my "Geeks" video from earlier this evening for a discussion of the July 5 event. It would have been preferable to have a longer-lived tornado and no macroburst. The damage would have been in a 1/2 mile wide path and not 3+ miles wide. Arrow shows tornado path.

Hot today, but on today's date 90 years ago: the second hottest day on record here. The hottest (103°) was a few days earlier on 7/10/1936.
This week's heat won't be as intense or long-lived as the start of July, but it will be pretty toasty. The heat will be accompanied by dry weather over the next few days.
