Award-winning writer, game designer (both video and ttrpg). evelorien.itch.io One half of @makingheyer.bsky.social Former writer/producer for Dreamfeel. Worked on If Found. Was part of the Voltage Organised Writers strike, still proud of that. She/her.
A red flame in Barad-dûr, based on the conversation in the most recent shelved by genre episode. I wanted the city to look both industrial and unsettling, so I tried to use a real mix of building styles, and avoid too many curves/natural shapes.
It's been over a week since I submitted Romantasy Klondike to #1prpgjam, so here's some thoughts about the design. It started with a kind of flash of insight, which was that one of my boredom solutions as a child, if I didn't have a game to play or a book to read, was dealing rounds of solitaire.
Pps. Wait I forgot one last amaze thing! I didn't get to as many talks and workshops as I would have liked, but I nabbed a place at let's make a game manual for a game that doesn't exist, led by @hatimb00.itch.io It was a wonderfully creative and playful experience, and the finished manual! gorgeous
Ps. Posting this I realised I forgot to mention dome king cabbage, a charming visual novel whose art is so absurdly impressive that I had multiple conversations wondering how they achieved it
Finally, a little showcase of things I collected over the days there, hanging out with my travel alligator
I only played a little bit of Panthalassa but that was all I needed to be totally won over. Another game doing thrilling things with its UI and interfaces.
I didn't get to play Season 31 but only because there was always someone there absolutely locked in whenever I walked past. I am getting it as soon as I get home. (also why there's no gameplay photo)
I played the demo for beware the cartographer, which shows immense promise as a puzzle game I will sink a million hours into. The map making tools feel really really good
I was lucky enough to meet the devs of The Wide Open Sky is Running out of Catfish at a workshop, and they were absolutely lovely - their game is also very cool. Another one that I look forward to sitting down and taking my time with, but immediately visually splendid and playful
Loopscroll is such a beautiful object. I wish I'd had more time to get a sense of the gameplay, which I found a little shallow in the time I had with it, but its tactile pleasure cannot be overstated.
I'm biased because it's by a mutual (shoutout @computerjames.bsky.social) but Stealth Crossword was wonderful. It starts charming and funny, then does something delightfully unexpected, and then something even MORE delightfully unexpected. It's GOOD good.
I was immediately drawn to the marvellous and startling interface of Ruminant 4444. The gameplay is beautifully opaque, and the text teases at the emotions seething under the alien surface. I would like to play more at home where I could really luxuriate in it
My personal favourite game so far, the one I am a complete sicko for, is A Permanent Echo by @threemoreyears.bsky.social. It's stylish, brilliantly written, thematically fascinating, visually dense. Having seen this I can't wait to give their previous game a try
Reading some mesopotamian proverbs and I love how they swing between immediately intuitive and nearly indecipherable
I wasn't expecting one award, let alone two, but deeply honoured by the recognition from my peers, and thrilled to see @imirt.bsky.social recognising the power and potential of ttrpgs. (this award is shared with @deptofmeteors.bsky.social, a wonderful editor)
Looking forward to being a @limitbreak.co.uk mentor this year. Feels like a nice continuation of my teaching work, and a lovely chance to get to know new people
If you're interested in strange games about making things and being destroyed by them, or you just want a good engine to tell a simple and compelling drama, come purvey my wares at evelorien.itch.io
Could not be more of a contrast between today and yesterday but a world of washed out greens is also very beautiful
Did I get caught in a big rainstorm? Yes. Was it worth it to get a pic like this? Also yes.
I didn't come up with this very good name but I know how to wedge my own agenda in
Look I very much a "you can never have too many pods queued" kind of girl, but this is A Lot it has to be said
It never hurt that the burren landscapes made it so easy to play at being in tolkein's world (and he visited the burren himself, so it's at least possible the inspiration was mutual)
