That wall of smoke is headed west. It will cover Seattle and much of the coastal Pacific Northwest for three days while temperatures rise into the 90s. It means suffering for those without A/C, air purifiers, masks, or housing. This is our first climate disaster of the year. Will it be the last?
This graph shows a much longer context within which civilizational collapse occurs. For a million years, the Earth has been in a delicate equilibrium which allowed our current biosphere to prosper. We have disrupted the balance on a global scale, sending the system into a new, inhospitable state.

When you realize that the ice caps are temporary, it changes your perspective as much as learning the Earth travels around the Sun. With a clear scientific view, we can better understand Mother Earth. She made for us a beautiful home which we, for reasons terrible and mysterious, have despoiled.
This seems like a good idea. I wonder if a consumer strike can reach enough scale to send a message?
For a wider context, note that ice in Antarctica froze only 30 million years ago. Before that, and for most of Earth's history, there has been no ice at the poles. For 100 million years the Earth has cooled. Now, we're headed back to a hot Earth because we triggered the cycle. Sources in alt-text.
