I am trying and failing to think of the last research library conservation lab that closed. By every measure, as research libraries move toward greater digital access, preserving special/distinctive collections has become more valuable: for digitization; for exhibition; for teaching; for research.

Just contemplating the butter cow on display at the Renwick Gallery. Has the Smithsonian committed to preserving hundreds of pounds of butter or just the documentation?

What year do we think that the American Archivist published this prescient text chastising archivists for their professional commitment to preservation?
