Workers like Karen need legal protections to back them up. That means heat standards with: 🌡️temperature thresholds to trigger breaks, shutdowns, and cooling methods 🧑🏽🏫 training for employers and workers 💵 hazard pay & compensation for lost wages linktr.ee/foodchainworkers to learn more!
This year, she and her coworkers took a stand with management, which secured them some improvements to the failing air conditioning. But that is far from enough!
"It is hot not just for the weather, but because of the stoves," says Karen, a member of the Laundry Workers Center, organizing for low-wage immigrant workers' rights across NYC and NJ.
😓 Food work is getting hotter and hotter. In New York, there are NO specific protections to keep restaurant workers like Karen — or any workers — safe from #ExtremeHeat.
New report on the #H2A temporary agricultural worker program is based on interviews with workers across WA, where the program has exploded in recent decades. H-2A is bad for ALL workers -- the guest workers it exploits and the local workers it takes work and financial stability from. #LinkInBio
Bosses won't lift a finger to protect workers from deadly heat unless we make them. That's why we need #HeatProtections for ALL workers now. Go to the #LinkInBio to more about how our members are organizing to protect themselves in Canada and the U.S., and take action today.
An egg fries on a car dashboard at a @j4mw.bsky.social action outside the Ontario Ministry of Labour last month. "We're all in the greenhouse until 8:00 pm. Nobody says anything. They will give you a little icicle or something like that."
"I saw someone's clothes wet from the top down," he told us, but there's no point in changing. "I don't think, sometimes, the supervisors or the bosses in the greenhouses realize how hot it is in our daily work. How terrible it could be that someone could faint inside of here."
In the greenhouse where Royland works, temperatures are even hotter than they are outside. As a member of @j4mw.bsky.social, he's speaking up about the lack of regulations protecting workers from #ExtremeHeat.
We're deeply grateful for her presence in FCWA member spaces like our leadership development trainings, farmworker sector meetings, 2023 tribunal on the struggles of farmworkers, and annual retreats. 💕 ¡Alma presente! 💕
Among the many legacies Alma leaves behind are fighting for the #GreenLight Law, which allows all NYS residents to apply for driver's licenses, regardless of status; and the #FLFLPA, granting collective bargaining, day of rest, and overtime pay to farmworkers across the state. ✊
🕊️ We join Alianza Agrícola and so many food workers and organizers mourning the loss of Alma Patricia Tzalain. Alma was a fierce advocate for worker and immigrant rights and a leader in our movement, always standing in solidarity with workers and developing new tactics to become a better organizer.

This Monday at 12pm, @j4mw.bsky.social will be outside the Ministry of Labour in Toronto to demand that Ontario enforce its own labour orders. Collect the money owed and ensure workers are paid‼️
$275,000 owed, $0 paid! Polat construction workers in Ontario won their #WageTheft case in July 2024, but the money is nowhere to be seen!
13 FCWA member groups at #LaborNotes! Representing food workers across five sectors and leading panels on abusive guest worker programs, theater of the oppressed, first contract fights, organizing across language divides and more! ✊️
Great time in Oakland this week for a conference on liberating funding for just food and farm systems ✊ The question remains: can we get funders invested in the labor movement? 🤔 Our movement infrastructure could use the money, but at the end of the day, we're organizing with our without them‼️
🤔 What does it take to move from commitments to gender equality to real change? A new report from @globallaborjustice.bsky.social and Asia Floor Wage Alliance shows freedom of association, collective bargaining and enforceable brand agreements are essential 👉️ asia.floorwage.org/wp-content/u...

🍎 #GoodFoodNY just passed the New York State legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support! This is a major step forward for New York farmers, workers, and communities and we’re eager to see this legislation headed back to @governor.ny.gov's desk! 📜🖊️
🗺️ 🚗 Before heading back to the west coast from New York, we took a quick detour to Massachusetts to visit our members at the Pioneer Valley Workers Center. Amazing to hear more in-depth about their community defense work! 👏👏 Support and learn more at pvworkerscenter.org
And we had so much fun with y'all --- we're fired up for the next ten years of building worker power! ✊🔥
Amazing to celebrate ten years of Alianza Agrícola this weekend in New York! 🥳 ❤️ So much hard work went into building this worker-led, immigrant-led organization into a voice for workers in their community and a powerful member of statewide coalitions fighting for immigrant and labor rights.
