it's 2D?? "what if FF16 didn't have its fantastic performances and cool spectacles?" you'd have the most snoozer game ever conceived
I've only played the REmake version of Jill's story, and I could've sworn it was more complicated when I did it, and the wiki agrees but then does not actually give any further info lmao
I think people are into the idea of NGE being low budget bc it evokes this sense of it being something niche, underground and subversive. But it was funded by many of the biggest anime producers of the time and had an all star staff. It was always intended as a hyper commercialised franchise.
Vib-Ribbon 6/10. I'm not great at rhythm games, and I've heard from people who are that this is a particularly bad rhythm game. However, that rabbit is soooooo cute and I love its tutorial song so so much. So who can say whether it's good or bad.
Panzer Dragoon 8/10. Pretty slick, pretty fun, I like the Nausicaa inspiration. I did need to use the old fashioned, stupidly long cheat codes to beat it. Not fully restoring your HP after each level is unhinged. Spent the whole hour playtime wondering how "dragoon" became a cool word in Japan.
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America 7/10. Despite the 250 years since, despite knowing it could never live up to its promises, still evocative and powerful. Maybe it's just cathartic to read the voices of elected officials who really, genuinely believed in something.
Sin and Punishment 9/10. Incredible audio visual experience, every piece of imagery is as striking and memorable as it possibly could be. Love its narrative style of presenting only snapshots of a clearly much larger picture, both world and character wise. Maybe the best N64 game?
Ys II Chronicles+: Ancient Ys Vanished: The Final Chapter 6/10. I want to respect the final dungeon being a truly sprawling labyrinth that takes up genuinely half the game, but I was not having a good time for a bit there. I like the obviously Laputa inspired setting but wish they did more with it.
Misericorde Vol 1 7/10. Went in completely blind here and was pleasantly surprised by a lot of it. I love Hedwig, she's so cute. I feel like my attention span is a little too short for something as much of a slowburn as this, but the fact that I still want to finish it speaks to how cool it is.
We Know The Devil 8/10. Loved the structural element of the secret, true end. Said ending's revolutionary call for sexual and gender liberation feels... quaint? a decade on. Just as relevant now as then, but so many have since said it so loudly that it feels like this game is shy in comparison.
Ys I Chronicles+: Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen 7/10. I really appreciate this as a JRPG trying to be beginner friendly in its time, even if the final boss felt like it defeated the whole point. What do you mean he's called Dark Fact. This release does a lot for the game's charm with its presentation.
I have thoughts but wrote far too much and didn't want to spam you with 10 replies.
Doom: Eternal 5/10. Trades everything genuinely cool about 2016 for unimpressive camp machismo. Story is incoherent without supplemental reading and I am not inspired to dive in. Platforming is way too jank. The faster paced combat has its appeal, but I don't think it's a straight upgrade.
LONER_DOG://Snuff Puppy Carnage Society 10/10. I wanted to keep the thread to one post per entry, but, shit, lmao. The most extreme, alienating, abrasive piece of art it could be, while still clearly having a heart. Its central message is that the only way through is community between queer people,
The Romance of the Moth and the Flame 9/10. Definitely the most plural validating story I've ever seen. Love the kinetic presentation. Spent the whole credits thinking "I hate when girls die" so I'm glad that post credit exists.
Seams and Senses 8/10. Gripping and way more consistently funny than I expected. Each winner has taken a very different approach to "toxic" so far, I assume the judges picked for variety. Excited for the next part, I wanna see the theme of how art affects and shapes people be further explored.
RIDE HOME 8/10. Great example of how to do more with less, now that's some Toxic yuri. Not really sure if I should wish for happiness for this relationship, but I still do. Ivy reminds me of kinder characters, ones she could grow into if she actually learned to love.
and Roger 5/10. idk about this one, I appreciate the idea, but it all feels kinda hokey...? Presenting its subject matter as a twist, revealing the twist multiple times for some reason, interrupting itself constantly with minigames even when not appropriate.
Ten Metre Tide 8/10. I really be playing a winner of the Toxic Yuri VN Jam 2025 like "this girl isn't very nice..." I hope she and the other two find happiness in their new lives tho.
Watanare (13-17) 10/10. IT'S PEAK. IT'S CINEMA. IT'S ANIME as the streaming brand helpfully reminds me. Can't believe I get to start a new year with a poly ship that SAILS.
of the Devil - episode 2 8/10. Liked how the SHAFTisms were dialled up even further, how Morgan's Night Life came into play in the case, getting a little more of a peek inside her mind. I want more Emma... but I didn't seriously expect to get more Emma before case 4/5 in this AA inspired game lmao.
How Do You Live? 9/10. Absolutely refusing to use this one's English title, AWFUL change from the same shallow cultural well that brings you Cozy Ghiblicore AI Art. This isn't cozy or wholesome, only "family friendly" in the sense that there's no on-screen gore. It's weird, unsettling, at times
Doom (2016) 8/10. The most universal 8/10? Doom (1993) seems like such a quaint little thing now, it feels funny that there was ever a moral panic around it. This game accomplishes the unenviable task of convincing people 20+ years later that Doom is, in fact, still badass.
of the Devil - episode 1 8/10. More conventional but still less married to its structure than its inspirations. I need Emma carnally.
