What I think the real genius of the look came in its feature opens. The *moment* the timer hit zero, we now had what was branded "StartTIME" - a fun stock video of something starting up, turning on, or launching. This video, from FenwickTV, shows the effect: (Original: youtu.be/i6SWw0SD7pI?... )

What this reface did was keep the same information, but reduce it - the Showtime logo is now a bug on the lower right, the elaborate L bar countdown is now a simple timer in the upper right. This also allowed promos to play full screen.

This was an evolution of a presentation element Showtime introduced in 1990 (and sister The Movie Channel introduced in 1988); an L bar showing the name of the show coming up next and how much time remained until it started. It was unwieldy, and the accompanying look dark and baroque:

It's funny how the font used for clues on Jeopardy! became iconic, because in 1984 it very much was not. That font, Korinna, was basically one of the de facto standards of television graphics in the mid-80s. Like the Action News Theme, it became iconic simply because they never changed it.
