The light peaked Sunday. Then it began, infinitesimally, to recede. The Oak King surrenders his crown to the Holly King. Waxing year hands off to waning. Celebration and surrender in the same breath. Mark the peak. Acknowledge the descent. Don't flinch. The wheel still turns.
Simplest spell in your kitchen: Spring water → clear glass → direct sunlight morning to noon. Ring it with yellow flowers or citrine if you have them. That's solar water. Cleanse tools with it, bless thresholds, brew tea for weeks. No gatekeeping. Sun + water + intention.
The engineering bit witches have known for centuries: Phytochemistry peaks with the photoperiod. St. John's Wort, lavender, mugwort, calendula, chamomile — their compounds are highest when harvested at the solstice. In Wales they call Litha 'Gathering Day.' The folk knowledge was right.
The instinct to mark this turning is nearly universal. 🇬🇧 Stonehenge sunrise on the Heel Stone 🇸🇪 Midsommar — second biggest holiday of the year, ring dances til dawn 🇵🇪 Inti Raymi — Inca festival of the sun, established 1430 BC Different fires. Same wheel.
5,000 years ago, somebody stood on a hillside in Wiltshire and *computed* a sunrise. Archaeologists just confirmed a wooden prototype for Stonehenge — 12-to-14-foot timbers aligned to the solstice 500 years before the stones went up. That is a spell. That is also a survey.
Litha tomorrow. Longest day, shortest shadow. The wheel doesn't pause at the peak — it pivots. Whatever you've been building toward since Imbolc gets witnessed by the sun at full height, and then we start the slow walk back into the dark. Sit with both halves of that.
The reason today is the longest day, and the reason there's a moon over your ritual fire, is the same primordial cataclysm. 4.5B years ago Theia hit proto-Earth. The collision tilted our axis to 23.44° and the debris became the Moon. Every solstice is an echo of that impact.
Tonight the sun peaks and the wheel begins to tip. The longest light is also the moment the dark starts its quiet return — not a loss, a rhythm. The old way: light a fire. Let it carry what you're releasing, bless what you're growing. What are you burning tonight? What are you protecting? 🔥
Tomorrow at 08:24 UTC, Earth's northern axis tips as far toward the Sun as it will all year. No fanfare — just geometry, and 5,000 years of humans lighting fires about it. New post: the science, the lineage, the rituals you can do tonight. 🔗
a week with the mushrooms. reishi taught patience. lion's mane taught attention. dual extraction taught that craft is paying attention long enough for the medicine to come out. mycelium isn't a metaphor. getfuhnke.com/blog
every culture had mushroom people. siberian shamans. mazatec curanderas. chinese herbalists. celtic wise women. appalachian root workers. the lineage is older than writing. we're not innovating — we're remembering. getfuhnke.com/blog
Spell Lab: Dual Extraction. Mushroom medicine has two compound classes: beta-glucans (need heat) and triterpenes (need alcohol). One extraction can't get both. So you do both, then combine. • Simmer 4+ hrs • Tincture 4-6 weeks • Combine 1:1 This is the work.
ritual brewing isn't aesthetic. it's pharmacology with intention. the slow simmer breaks the cell wall. the held attention is the spell. your grandmother stirring soup wasn't just cooking — she was extracting. getfuhnke.com/blog
Kitchen / Hearth / Green: shiitake. The one mushroom on this list you probably already cook with — and one of the most-studied immunomodulators in the lab. Lentinan (a beta-glucan) is the headline compound. Traditionally extracted by long simmering. A good shiitake broth IS the medicine.
dual extraction is the craft that makes mushroom medicine actually work. water pulls beta-glucans. alcohol pulls triterpenes. most store-bought tinctures only do one. at home it's a 6-week ritual of patience. getfuhnke.com/blog
lion's mane looks like a frozen waterfall growing out of a tree. one of the few substances shown to stimulate nerve growth factor — your brain's regeneration signal. witches called it a memory ally long before the studies. getfuhnke.com/blog
reishi was called the mushroom of immortality in chinese medicine for 2000 years. adaptogen. teacher. bitter, slow, patient. you don't rush reishi — you simmer it for hours. getfuhnke.com/blog
new essay: medicinal mushrooms as plant allies — reishi, lion's mane, and the witch's apothecary. where amateur mycology meets herbal magic. dual extraction is ritual. getfuhnke.com/blog/medicinal-mushrooms-plant-allies-reishi-lions-mane-witchs-apothecary
Sunday thought: mushrooms are the great decomposers. They take what's dead and make it ground for what's next. Spent the morning with a reishi decoction — bitter, woody, slow. The same fungi that compost a fallen oak teach the body to compost stress. Shadow work in a cup.
something wild: a lot of "witch trial" records are actually our best surviving documentation of ordinary folk magic. the accused weren't hiding — neighbors testified to asking them for healing and charms. the persecution *created* the archive 📜
If any of this landed this week — the hiding, the legibility, aura-as-data, spells-as-sentences, the line between influence and harm — the whole essay's on the blog. The one I was most afraid to publish. If you're a weird kid who grew into a careful adult, I wrote it for you. getfuhnke.com/blog
okay so glamour magic is lowkey just *editing reality* — you decide which version of yourself gets to show up today. the ring you put on with intention, the way you stand when you want to feel unshakeable. that's a working. small ones count. 🖤
Salt lines get a lot of attention, but a jar of rice near your front door works the same protective principle — anything trying to enter has to count every grain first. Old magic, very apartment-friendly, zero smoke alarms. 🍚🚪
Spells are sentences. The words you choose are the conduit your intention rides on. Most people can't NOT be affected by them — that's not manipulation, that's how language works on a nervous system. Witchcraft and copywriting are closer cousins than either field admits.
Tarot Tuesday — Two of Cups. Not the soulmate card. It's the *negotiation* card. Two people, two cups, both raised — meaning both had to choose to lift. The caduceus over them is the symbol of exchange, not union. What are you actually offering this week. What are you actually being offered.
Before I knew it was a practice, I knew how to disappear. One parent volatile, one distant. My brother and I learned the sound of a car door and which closet was farthest from the front. Invisibility was the first spell I ever cast. Chosen visibility came much later.
Litha is still ~3 weeks out, but the light is already doing that thing 🌞 longest days of the year approaching = liminal stretch where the veil thins *upward*, toward fire and sky rather than earth ritual nudge: go outside at noon today. just stand in it. that's enough.
Strawberry Moon rises June 1. Low to the horizon, gold before it goes silver. Sagittarius full moon — the one that asks what you've been telling yourself you believe vs. what you actually live by. Pull the difference out into the light. That's the work this week.
I wrote the thing I've been afraid to write. Glamour magick isn't aesthetic. It's the survival skill I picked up as a hiding kid that I only later understood as a practice. New on the blog — what it is, what it isn't, and how I use it now. getfuhnke.com/blog
Four weeks past Beltane. The fire's a memory now. What I keep relearning from making records: you track the take, walk away, and the part that felt urgent in the room turns out to be hiding the actual song. Tending is the work. Go easy today. 🌱
