my theory

regarding freeware, the price of games, and supporting creators

"I release freeware myself as well and have several reasons for doing so. But the main and most significant is that no person is more or less deserving of experiencing art based on how many stupid numbers they have. If a game is $70, only people who have $70 are “allowed” to experience it. To be callous, this is fucking stupid. What is the correlation there? Someone having a whole $70 to spare does not make them a more deserving recipient than someone who does not. Obviously in the indie space the value proposition is much lower but the principal is the same. If someone can’t spare $15 to engage with something they’re interested in, why should they be disallowed from doing so? It just doesn’t make sense to me. Obviously artists do need to be supported for their work but I do not believe this has to come at the cost of keeping certain demographics of people out. People with low incomes or going through a tough financial period or people with no income at all obviously deserve to enjoy art the same as anyone else. The ideal path through this is all games being “pay what you want” where there is no barrier to entry at all, but those who are willing and capable of giving have means to. Of course this isn’t the world we live in now but it is a future I believe in so I live by these beliefs, regarding the accessibility of my own work. What people don’t always realize is how generous people really will “pay what they want” when a predetermined price point isn’t locked onto a given work. If someone has the means and they appreciate the thing enough in my experience they really will reflect that in what they give back. In my mind this is really the only ethical pricing method that makes sense, and if it became widespread enough I think it would work out perfectly fine. The suggestion that revenue into the medium is suffering because people are offering too much value too willingly is completely ridiculous. That’s the point of being alive!!"
