I hardly ever use the word #seedling. But I did once, in a bilingual poem that was published in Issue 2 of Sixpence Society (NB: It's from a cycle of poems, ispired by Canadian poet Robert Kroetschs Field Notes, but of course, it is dedicated to my Dad) #thingstowriteabout

The gardener

from Field Notes – for Robert Kroetsch

Although his name is not Harding,
my father is a proper sort of gardener.
It’s his fault that I like tomatoes, broccoli,
cale (Grünkohl, as we say in German)
strawberries, plums, and apples.
I asked him: How do you grow a poet?
He smiled at me whimsically
(verschmitzt, as we say in German).
It’s very simple, he said,
you take a seedling, put it
on a good basis, make it feel
welcome, water it with
love and fertilize it with
songs and stories, give it
the space it needs. At least, that’s
what we did with you.
(Alles richtig gemacht, as we say in German)

You make me dream of dragonflies
& in the morning, the streets
are glazed with liquid light.
At breakfast, the waitress wears
a dragonfly brooch &
though I haven’t told you
about it yet, I say:
Look, it made it out of my dream
unharmed. Then I ask myself
if dragonflies hibernate.
I could google it, but
there is no Wi-Fi in this poem
& my breakfast tea tastes
just too good, so I wonder if
this is just another dream.

I never cared much for money
& I was never good at math –
a trillion dollars, that’s a lot of zeros,
so that cannot be much…

but if I had it, I’d spent it all
for love & beauty, I’d travel
the world & most of all,
I’d give to those who need it –
the homeless, looking for a dry place to sleep,
the orphaned refugee kids, looking for a home,
the scientists, looking for a cure for cancer,
the animals who need a shelter.
& after that, it would still be enough
for me & my loved ones to have
a good normal life &
to support even more good causes.

Unordentliches Gedicht gegen den Militarismus

Manchmal
begegnen mir Leute,
die das Gesicht verziehen,
als hätten sie in eine Zitrone gebissen,
wenn sie erfahren, dass ich niemals
in der Armee gedient habe.
Statt etwas Sinnvolles zu lernen, z.B.
wie man sein Gewehr zusammenbaut, während
man Liegestütze macht oder Bier trinken
(laut meines Vaters das Einzige, dass er beim Bund
gelernt hat), habe ich 1 Jahr
für seelenpflegebedürftige Kinder gekocht,
mit Ihnen gespielt, gebastelt, gelacht
(und manchmal auch mit ihnen geschimpft) -
Erfahrungen, die ich nicht missen möchte
und die mich 19-jährigen Besserwisser
auch menschlich weitergebracht haben.

Ganz zu schweigen davon, dass sie zu meiner
endgültigen Berufswahl beigetragen
haben: Letztendlich ist also
die Bundeswehr daran schuld, dass
ich Lehrer geworden bin.

Lasst sie also ihr Gesicht verziehen, ich beiße
schließlich selbst in eine Limette, wenn ich
herausfinde, wen ich da vor mir habe: 20 Jahre
nach Ende der Dienst-Zeit
und immer noch sind sie nicht im
Zivilleben angekommen.
Noch schlimmer
sind die Ausgemusterten, die ihrer

nie-erlebten Militärkarriere hinterhertrauern
(eine Art Bestätigung, die ich nie gebraucht habe) –
mindestens einer dieser Clowns
sitzt im Bundestag als Vertreter einer ehemals
pazifistischen Partei & hat nur wenig
Verständnis für Pazifismus (wie passend,
ich habe auch nur wenig Verständnis
für Herrn Hofreiter),
aber der Bundestag ist auch kein Zirkuszelt,
sondern das Hauptquartier für einen Kriegseinsatz,
dessen Teilnehmer ausgelost werden –
eine Idee, bei Shirley Jackson abgeschrieben.
Willkommen in der Dystopie.
Dabei habe ich das Ende der Wehrpflicht
immer als zivilisatorischen Fortschritt angesehen.
Auch deshalb hoffe ich, James Brown nimmt es mir
nicht übel, wenn ich mir seine Worte borge,
um es einmal ganz deutlich zu sagen:

a quietus from the madness
of the world & move
to a little cottage in the woods -
just you, me & a horse named Tara.
You'd design all our clothes
& I'd finally have the time
to write my novel. Together,
we'd feed Tara the carrots
we'd grow in our garden.
On clear nights, we'd take
a midnight ride - just a woman,
a man & a horse, looking
at the moon.
No politics, no intrigues, no wars.

Birthday Gift

I met Ginsberg in a dream
on the dusky streets of NY’s East Village
& though we’ve never met,
he recognized me immediately
I wanted to apologize for
all the irrelevant allusions I’ve made
to his poetry, but he shushed me
like a priest in confessional,
absolving me of my lesser literary sins.
Then I remembered that it was his b’day,
so, I kissed him on the dome, like
a blushing acolyte, before I woke up

The wind had left the city.
It had missed the wide-open plains,
where it could run free.
It had missed the salty smell of the ocean,
& the cries of the seagulls.
In return, I missed the wind, especially
on hot days or in autumn, when the leaves
stayed on the trees & my kite
wouldn't fly anymore.
I wondered, Though, if other people
had noticed as well.

The pain

After 3 long years, my back pain and I finally seperated. It had been a troubled relationship, going back and forth, on and off. After I had announced the seperation, my back pain refused to believe it, clinging to me and after I definitively told her it was over, she lingered there for some time. Finally, the news settled in and she had to accept it. My back pain finally moved out and now lives in Bremen.
I rejoiced for half a day.Then my leg started to hurt.

If I were a cat,
I’d write cat poetry,
about the sound
the can opener makes,
about how the birds eye me
suspiciously & how I secretly
love dogs (at least some).
In the evenings, I’d sit
in the spotlight of the moon
& meow my poems into the night.
I’d be world famous in my quarter –
Cat-Lynn, the poeta laureatus of Cats.

Pent up in a room, way
too small for so many people
at the ugly & decaying Berlin Zoo,
I wait to catch a glimpse of
the King of the Animals. Then,
his majesty appears, not looking
very majestic at all: old, thin, weak,
almost famished. I could count
his rips as he crawled into his
throne room. I felt pity for this creature,
dragged before our eyes out of
sensation mongering. Suddenly,
we lock eyes & his look
doesn’t feel weak at all.
For a moment, I shiver under
the strength & pride that still
live in this animal. “Don’t
count me out” it said “I still
don’t belong to the old iron.
& to prove it, I’m going to
eat you first!”

For the #vss365 prompt of #dichotomous, I offer a little prose poem I wrote some time ago & still, I'm not so sure about what to do with it. (I even submitted one or two times, but to no avail).

Two souls

When you come into our little school, the first you’ll see is a whiteboard with pictures of all the teachers. For the new school year, I thought about writing “Writer-in-Residence” under mine. My first idea was “poeta laureatas”, but wouldn’t that be a little too presumptous?
My wife, my pedagogical counselor, rolls her eyes, saying “Nearly as bad as the time you opted for ph'nglui mglw'nafh cthulhu r'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn when you were designing t-shirts in class.”

In the corner of my grandfather's garden,
I planted my on little garden, for
carrots & peas (which, at that time,
I only liked to eat raw). Thinking back
on it now, its form & measurements
remind me of a grave (another memento
mori I didn’t recognize at that time), but
I never buried anything there, only seeds.
For two or three years, I grew my own
vegetables. But I’ve never become
the gardening type. Nowadays,
I prefer to nourish & cherish
other things, like words & hope.
