I am deeply sympathetic to this world view because it *feels* correct, but totally misses the mark in a Democracy (we are not owed anything, we actively make choices) and in what a leader *is* (one who inspires you to follow) We are not a board of directors looking to fill a c-suite with managers

You are not OWED “inspiring candidates” in your politics.

You are owed competent civil servants who can keep society functioning to meet people’s basic rights and needs, who will keep people fed and housed and SAFE.

Fun fact: post WWII crimes agaisnt humanity laws we're based on Golden Age of Piracy anti-pirate laws. With that being said, while their were certainly some very bad pirates, lots of them didn't kill and their codes of conduct on their ships are impressive documents for their times

And the morbidly funny thing is that the exact same process happened with the 'pirate' variant of the Skull & Crossbones, because those early modern pirates were every bit as evil as the fucking Nazis.

But once piracy was crushed, it slowly turned into a harmless symbol associated with edgy fun.
