People have been so kind about my post regarding grief and losing Blossom. I have so many stories about her. Would you like to hear them? This is a dog who traveled a lot of her life with us, side by side. She has been in planes, trains, buses, cars, boats, always unflappable.

This popped off. I am trying to wander through the comments because so, so many of you have been so kind. Thank you. Blossom was a remarkable dog. It is hard to find my footing again after the loss of my right hand girl. It will come, I know, but it will take time. She left a wonderful legacy.

This is her first outing with us as my son's service dog. She was with him from 6 to 16, and she was our world. I am so sorry you know this pain too.

From my Fall 2025 Honors Project, "Veil of Ashes", which I really should dive back in to. It could use a LOT of work to make it so much better.

I left my sons with Naevius and Aelia for a while so they could help the elderly couple around the house and learn compassion I lacked at their age. They were indulgent with both boys yet told them fine stories of their grandfather, me and Marcus. If they mentioned my slave sister or her mother, I do not know.
Maybe one day we will all meet again in a kinder time and kinder place.

From a series called A Hellrider's Fond Musings, "A Simple Night" is told by Zevlor as he ends up sharing a lovely evening with a dear companion. He reflects on his life and journey throughout the series and finds new beginnings.

We sat side by side as the sun dipped to touch the horizon. We took our time savoring what we ate, the simplicity of the fare not diminishing the pleasure it brought. These were things made from our labors. I paused to admire a slice of apple, amazed that for the first time I had a hand in its harvest. I saw its tree go from bare branched to lush with flowers and leaves then fruit as the seasons turned. The scent of apple blossoms was a fine one. The thought of it made me smile and Ena fixed me with an inquisitive look.

“Halsin would laugh to hear this from me but what a wonder it is to see things grown with your own hands. I have been a warrior my whole life, a learner, a leader, a fighter, but a farmer?” I chuckled as I shook my head. “Such a world this can be sometimes.”

“Now you wield a sickle not a sword. Do you ever wonder why?” Ena asked.

She was not one to speak much. I could not help that my brows rose in surprise, but I did my best not to make a fuss. Her voice was mellow and sweet. The distraction bought me time to truly consider an answer to her question.

“Penance,” I finally said, a word long considered in the dark of night when silence felt heavy and I was alone. It was a question I had asked myself so many times.

I did not expect her to shake her head. “Healing. Not penance. You do this to heal. I do this to heal. Souls carry wounds. We soothe them, repair them in different ways.”

There was something surreal about the manner in which my familiar companion spoke, like an ancient wisdom had settled on her slender frame like a mantle. She was a whimsical creature yet in that moment I saw only the serenity of a spring in a deep, secluded forest about her. It brimmed with life; with beauty. It brimmed with hope. The trust in her clear eyes, the faith she held in what she’d spoken, they gave me pause.

I looked away. There was something there that I was not ready to see or feel. She did not push. She simply handed me another slice of apple.

I gave the amazing @lucidpeech.bsky.social a loose description of Calpurnia, the lead sister in Hags of Mud Wallow, and look what they came up with! She's so sweet. The only thing missing is Fiera, who is off camera going through her long list of absolutely appalling swears.
