Monterey Bay? Our naturalist on Friday was similarly amazed at a pod of 400-500 dolphins, plus about 8-10 humpbacks, and a few sea lions. (Just the dolphins, here, unless one of the humpbacks is hanging around in the background.) Near Moss Landing, at the shallower part of the Monterey Canyon.

As noted in the alt text, the poster was probably only the image, without the album title or artist name. Which fit well, I thought, with the landscape in West Texas (near San Angelo), where I was then living.

The couple is in front of a small house on an arid landscape - reminded me of West Texas, which is where I had it on my wall. I think my poster may not have had the words, only the image: a couple dancing, it seems, but unable to move.

Saw Springsteen and the E Street Band tonight - Land of Hope and Dreams tour, Inglewood CA - great set, all about America, and I might just be inspired to follow The Boss’ wish that we not think every bootlicker out there is stupid and evil. (Not his exact phrasing … but I think that was the gist.)

The only reason to pretend that a baseball game is being broadcast on the radio but have it from a few years before Steve went into the ice is because Nick Fury intended it that way - probably to confirm how recovered he was, or to let Steve realize for himself how much time had passed.

If I'm reading this correctly, the chairman of the DNC (Robert Hannegan) got Truman on the 1944 ticket with FDR by using a three-way-call attack straight out of Mean Girls. Article is at www.knoxfocus.com/archives/vic...

Harry Truman still refused to become a candidate until the enterprising Robert Hannegan got the president on the phone and the senator heard FDR inquire if Truman had been lined up.
Hannegan replied, no, and said Harry Truman was the contrariest mule in all of Missouri.
To Truman’s horror, he heard Franklin Roosevelt bark, “Well, you can tell the Senator that if he wants to break up the Democratic Party in the middle of the war, that’s his responsibility.”
The president slammed down the receiver. Harry Truman agreed to run.

The news that the United States now owns part of Intel reminds me....a lot....of this bit from P.J. O'Rourke.

I don't want to disparage private enterprise. The world has political, religious, and intellectual leaders for that. But when a totalitarian government gets cozy with large financial and manufacturing concerns, it rings a twentieth-century historical bell. I'm thinking how a certain "people's car" -"ein Volkswagen"- got its start. I'm thinking "Made the trains run on time." I'm thinking, "Greater Asian Coprosperity Sphere." There's a technical name for this political ideology.

P.J. O'Rourke, from his book "Eat the Rich" (1998) describing his impressions of China in the chapter "How to Have the Worst of Both Worlds: Shanghai." This is in response to multinational corporations who were cozying up to China after the handover of Hong Kong. With this in mind, he muses "I'm just wondering if multinational executive have thought this through."

Since @indyfromspace.bsky.social didn't allow quote-reposting on her post about how "The US is finally influencing foreign policy in a positive way," (by pushing other countries away leftward) only wanted to say that the last frame here was my immediate response to it: "We're Heroes!!!"

Calvin and Hobbes are driving with his mom when the car goes "KLUNK." Mom gets mad at it, pulls over and opens the hood to check the engine. While she's looking under the hood, Calvin and Hobbes are disappointed to see nobody is stopping to help. They decide they should honk the horn to get some attention. Because Mom is under the hood at that time, it's a very loud and frightening BEEEEP! that has her yelling AAUGH!. Despite her visible anger, Calvin and Hobbes say in unison "HOORAYY! Someone stopped! WE'RE HEROES!" The driver of the car that stopped asks the mom "Want me to call a tow truck, lady?" to which she responds "First call the police and report an infanticide."

Hey @nathanrichardson.bsky.social pretty sure this was your work on Twitter-That-Was. Repost or otherwise claim ownership, if you like. I've been wanting to redo it using "Teufelskern" as the name but ... reality intrudes. (This is the first time I've wanted to import my tweet history.)

The German for "Demon Core" is "Teufelskern" which would make it even more Kraftwerk-like, in my humble opinion.

Pretty brilliant idea on showing what negotiation should be happening.

Text is: “The negotiating table” I would show it to the entire world by setting up a negotiating table, chair, and a rug right in the Capitol Rotunda. Then place one chair across, facing it, with a sign on the table that says “Reserved for Republicans.” Then I’d establish a rotation of Democratic Senators pulling 2-hour shifts and a 24-hour livestream of watching them sit there, read books, do paperwork, and just hang out...waiting for Republicans to negotiate.

The lawyers ruin everything again. Tragic. Thinking further last night, I looked at the timing of SNL's first Hans and Franz, thought of your work on Commando and Running Man, and guessed I had it figured out. Ah well.

When they met at Mar-a-Lago, Lewandowski laid it all out. He’d spent several weeks digging into the finances of the campaign, he told Trump, and things weren’t adding up. Far too much money was being spent on programs insignificant to his electoral success, and there had been no apparent oversight of contracts and arrangements that created a windfall for certain campaign employees. Lewandowski told Trump that he’d taken the liberty of bringing in a private consultant—personally escorting this outsider into the campaign’s offices—to study the books. This person’s conclusion, Lewandowski said, was: “Your people are either completely incompetent, or they’re stealing from you.”
