I think you're on the right path. One of my favorite cat art vendors uses her black kitty as a model (black kitties are notoriously difficult to photograph) and I think she does a great job composing the photos in terms of subject pose and contrast. Not affiliated, just supportive!
Our girl doggy is approaching the age and health as well that this decision may be needed in the future. Our gato got through a very scary January and luckily has a long life ahead still.
My little guy is currently recovering from PU surgery, I have an idea how stressful it is when our friends are sick. I was able to contribute a little bit, everything will be okay.
