Seattle police officer says that an entire SPD squad quiet quit after the 2020 protests.

For Mike Magan, the pullback in enforcement spread even to his fellow detectives, causing him to hit breaking point. “One of the robbery squads just decided they weren’t going to work anymore,” he says. “They wouldn’t leave the office, they wouldn’t help you on search warrants, they wouldn’t come out and conduct interviews with you. They wouldn’t come out and track video. It was heartbreaking.” Magan couldn’t stand it and decided to retire early.

SWAT TEAM SELECTION DAY
The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team is seeking qualified applicants for anticipated unit vacancies. The next Selection
Day is March 24lh, 2026. There will be 2 additional training days on April 28"' and 29,h for those that are selected to move on in the
process. Youmust receive approval from your chain of command for any of the required training days. Overtime is not authorized.
SWAT performs a variety of high-risk missions in support of patrol and follow-up units, including:
□ Hostage and barricaded person situations
□ Rapid deployment to in-progress, high-risk incidents
□ High-risk stakeouts, arrests, vehicle takedowns and search warrant services
□ Dignitary protection details
□ Civil disturbance and riot control incidents
□ Waterborne and aerial mutual aid deployments
□ Tactical training inside and outside the department
SWAT officers are subject to call-out 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The training and mission schedule can involve last-minute
shift adjustments and mandatory overtime. Officers arc expected to exceed minimum standards on unit qualifications, which include
biannual fitness tests, and biannual weapons qualifications. Officers must also show proficiency in all tactics and training.
To be considered, candidates must:
□ Prior to joining the team, have at least 5 years as a Seattle Police officer from the time of FTO completion
□ Have at minimum, 4 years as a sworn police officer on Selection Day.
□ Be in excellent physical condition
□ Safely and competently handle firearms
□ Pass an oral interview and review of OPA files
□ Have the recommendation of current and past supervisors
□ Possess the ability to work as a member of a team
□ Primary residence must not include a ferry or mountain pass commute to Seattle and is subject to a maximum mileage
requirement
Candidates scheduled for SWAT Selection Day will be evaluated on their physical fitness, handgun proficiency and marksmanship,
patrol procedures, oral presentation …

The shooting happened directly in front of the Seattle Police Department's event command center in the Armory:

The Seattle Police Department will utilize the Incident Command System for the planning and execution of this event. Lieutenant Farwell will be
the Incident Commander and Sergeant Tony Baily will be the Operations Chief. A contingent of Officers will be deployed onto the Seattle
Center grounds beginning at each day. sergeant and of bicycle officers will provide patrol on the perimeter of
campus.
The Seattle Center Police office (basement of the Armory) will be utilized as a command post for the duration of the Festival. This office will
have all of the necessary equipment, supplies, and paperwork to effectively handle this event.
Officers assigned to the Bite Of Seattle Festival will be assigned IDA call signs and will be logged in with radio. will be the
frequency used for the event. It will be monitored by a dispatcher.
The Seattle Center Admonishment and Exclusion forms will be utilized by Officers when addressing any campus rules and regulations violations.
LOGISTICS:
Kelly Vandyke of the SPD Quartermaster will provide and prepare food/drinks during the festival.

NEW: Seattle Police had "increased staffing assigned to the Seattle Center and surrounding neighborhoods" on the July 26 Bite of Seattle shooting according to an SPD Incident Action Plan I obtained:

The Bite of Seattle is a Northwest summer tradition featuring 50 plus restaurants and vendors, 100 craft vendors, Washington wines, craft beer
and cider tasting, 5 entertainment stages, beer gardens, a family fun zone and more. The Bite of Seattle will draw several thousand people to
the Seattle Center over the 3 day event, July 24-26, 2026. The Festival hours are 1100-2000 hours Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In years past,
there have been large scale disturbances associated with the Bite. These disturbances usually originate on the Seattle Center grounds during the
late afternoon and early evening hours. Large fights, multiple assaults, and property crimes are often associated with the many young people
who come to the Bite. These disturbances can spill out onto Broad Street and the surrounding neighborhoods, eventually ending up in the
downtown core. We have seen a reduction in these types of incidents the past few years. In an effort to mitigate some of these problems, the
West Precinct will increase staffing assigned to the Seattle Center and surrounding neighborhoods.

Among the findings here, the Israeli government directly intervened with local law enforcement, and requested they travel to Israel for training. The Ministry that made the request has since changed its name to the Ministry of National Security and is now run by Itamar Ben-Gvir.

More recently, Target and Oftelie took their plan on the road to the 2024 National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives conference in New Orleans, where they emphasized the need for “unwavering legitimacy” of police. Smith presented the plan alongside Oftelie and Waco, Texas, police Chief Sheryl Victorian and Madison, Wisconsin, police Chief Shon Barnes, whose department received a $100,000 gift from Target shortly before the conference in June.

A thank-you email from LNW to Barnes and Victorian, obtained by Prism through a public records request, indicated their remarks touched on the role “community can play as a force multiplier,” a possible reference to a military concept defined as anything that will help a frontline soldier get more done with less time or expense.

Seattle Fire proposes new technology for fire, medical and rescue responses

The Seattle Fire Department is proposing to add up to three drones to its fleet of emergency response apparatus. The Emergency Response Aerial Technology – or ERAT – would be used in a limited number of fire, medical or rescue responses where having an aerial view would provide greater safety for firefighter/EMTs, paramedics and residents, and increase firefighting and rescue success.

If approved by the City Council and Mayor, Seattle Fire will use ERAT for specific types of responses, including fires in buildings, brush fires, water rescues, mass casualty incidents, technical rescues, hazardous materials and energy responses.

The department is also proposing to use the ERAT for less common but high-risk operations such as marine fires, railway incidents and after a natural disaster such as an earthquake.
