Painter. (Of people and things). Mostly realistic. Mostly oil. On a journey to somewhere.
Some 10 minute portraits done from life today. Ten mins is not very long to solve a likeness.
For some reason, I enjoy doing portraits (which I can’t ever sell) rather than something more commercial. Here’s the latest.
My completed #oilportrait of Liah. Done from life (4 hr session). Quite happy with how this feels.
Addicted to these long pose live portrait sessions. Getting a finished painting within the time is challenging but a lot of fun.
A bunch of 20 min portraits done from life today. Messing about with looser mark-making. This was a subglasses-special.
Another Sunday and another long form live portrait session. Once again I used transparent red oxide as the underpainting colour - which seems to yield less ashy portraits. Finally managed to produce a decent mostly finished painting in the time.
Me copying a Mick Inkpen drawing. My first attempt at this sort of art. (In physical media).
A little bit more work on the portrait I did on Sunday. Not crazy about my paint application but like the feel of this one.
Enjoyed painting this in a real-life portrait session. Didn’t quite get to finish it in the time but happy with the outcome. #allaprima #oilportrait
Started new painting: Man watching World Cup is being persuaded by women to do household repairs.
Intending to do some #tonedpaper portraits. Hoping that non digital portraits will force me to be a bit more careful in the initial block-out. Subject choice is from my favourite TV show. #andor #bix
Oil on board. A4. My very fast oil portrait of Lucy reading.
Some of my iPad portraits. Some famous people, some not.
About once a month, a bunch of us meet in a pub to do quick portraits of each other. This was today’s batch.
Did a little more to the portrait of Clayton. #allaprima. Such a great sitter.
Study of some lemons. Trying hard to get accurate colour. Looking at the bounce lighting and the subsurface scattering.
One of the most challenging things to do as artist, is a long form portrait with a live sitter. Did that today in Sheffield. Not sure if I got a perfect likeness but enjoyed the process.
This weekend my studio is open for visitors. Come along and say hello. (Sheffield, UK).
Currently enjoying painting these little 6”x6” canvases. I can work faster and I am less worried about getting everything right.
Another all-day portrait event: Painting a model over a 5 hour session. This time I messed-up. I didn’t spot the weakness in the painting. This is a cleaned-up version with tweaks to the drawing. #allaprima
Oil on mini-canvas. 6”x6” painting of a sleeping Horace the cat.
Playing with Pocket Procreate. Which is like Procreate, but for the iPhone. And you draw with your finger. The imprecision ends up looking a bit like oil paint.
Ooh - local gallery is using my Venice painting on their poster.
My still life oil painting of some sardines. An experiment in trying to avoid using blending and too little paint. Thicker paint and more economical marks. #allaprima
Digital portrait of local artist Bob. Done from life, but with a fix up pass.
It’s always a good time for a #mementomori This one just raw umber and solvent.
Every month I go to an all-day portrait session. With a model, proper lighting and about 5 hours of painting time. Pretty happy with the likeness this time. #oilportrait #allaprima
