But Dreyfus is wrong that awareness destroys it in general. The idea is that you're watching the game play itself; not that "you're playing it" but also not that "you're not watching". And it happens all the time that "fires start", that there's a breakdown of automaticity. A situation has arisen that the automatic self-play cannot handle. Usually at my level, they had a weird strafe; they were in an unexpected position. You leave the epoche to address the hottest fire & that entails focusing hard on the scenario & driving focal arising in generative many-partedness as hard as you can, searching for a path to victory, where the many partedness tends to arise as available alternatives. And then, fire resolved good or ill, immediately return to the epoche in comms ready to address the next one when it comes up. (Or, you're in performance mode because self-conscious flow is profoundly & addictively joyous & you don't want to push to frustration, & you chat with your team & watch passively or indeed in a bit of smug & perhaps even naughty indifference as you crush casuals in the lobby with the game playing itself beneath your light regard)
There is *one* focal arising in general (in humans anyway) and it's a valuable resource you spend where it counts; & it's a dangerous power you prevent from counterproductive fixations Now, it happened in college that (perhaps a little stoned & drunk, who can say, a lady never reveals her secrets) I would play with my dormmates & of course being very lost in my stoned thoughts I was quite startled to find how vividly the game played itself. I laughed & laughed obviously quite incapacitated and amazed that "some other idiot seems to be able to play halo, kinda funny, couldn't be me". Halo for me was about three things, all along. It was about friends, it was about mastery, & it was about this funny way of looking. I thought about it all the time; I wondered at it; I wanted to know. I took biochem & math in college (naieve stemlord that I was) thinking it would tell me the secrets; then, when it didn't work (still loved those subjects, very fascinating) I went on to philosophy. Don't ask me why this was in the water at the time but I thought the only respectable philosopher scientists were allowed to like was Quine. Well, Quine is a great philosopher who doesn't say anything about this. And I variously bounced off analytic mind for years (these guys write like they never played Halo! I would think, indignant) until I found Dreyfus's lectures on Ponty and Heidegger. I was hooked instantly & even though obviously I'm disagreeing with all three men in many respects, here at last were words I could use to begin to make progress without (what it was up until then) instant incoherence & confusion as I made my own words. And it's also why I hold my view with confident lightness despite being quite a bit less bright than the great masters (though I think I'm a much more moral person than Heidegger, while I think Ponty & Dreyfus were good men even role models, I don't think I'm at all as clever as they), it's because...well, this is really unusually good training data. It would be hard to view any of this as an athlete in flow (you're tired & you can't play as much, both, plus longer feedback loops), & even if you could, the uniformity the TV & control impose are philosophically rich because many tempting confusions are instantly foreclosed. And moreover, if Heidegger made Dasein mediate the seam between Ontic & Ontological, well, for him it all happened in a rather grand vocabulary, and you turn out to need that to really maintain faith in the seam

I realize I instantly started riffing on Dreyfus. But I'm not sure whether or not you know his thoughts on Heidegger so, swing in the dark that you do & I can elaborate if anything is unclear Here's some of the intel

So my main difference with Dreyfus is already there in what my goal and really my joy was in Halo 3, which was self-conscious flow. For Dreyfus, a contradiction in terms. The trouble he saw was real but he didn't have the whole story
Here's how I would teach it
I would say: Start with the radar (it's off in competitive play, but that's fine). What you are supposed to do, is repeatedly bring it in focal view, use it to make choices, and then experience the outcomes. And you're supposed to do that as much as you can. We're playing the game of "radar choices" so we play to give chances to do that & we focus on that & we don't care about the rest. And when you experience cycles of frustration & success at the focal version of radar choices, then you sleep. And then you do it again. And after a few times you can achieve with the radar what you already achieved with your fingers; you'll find it "manages itself" and it works with fewer and fewer focal requirements. Once it gets going good, learn to let it influence the flow of the game without ever bringing it into focal attention; but without ever letting it slip so far it doesn't matter where the dots are anymore. It should be in view, but only a little, and only enough. This is called "gardening a competency"; and we're going to use the abstract thing we just did as a template to self-consciously garden more
You can set kitchen timers and try to feel the ding (which means "the power weapon is up") right before the ding dings. Get frustrated if it fails (learning in secret clothes) or feel good when it succeeds; sleep on it. Repeat until it's taken to automaticity & add it to your garden

You layer your teammates dispositions in too, they "anticipate themselves" after you focus on anticipating what they'll do. [Redacted Teammate 1] is like you, he's smart & tricky; but he's mechanically strong, he's the best player and you don't need to manage him. Once you're done practicing (frustration is always learning, but that's where it's actively good; now we think it means we're going wrong, though we try not to let going wrong upset or distract us making it worse) you run in "performance mode". In performance mode you rest focal involvement in team comms in the epoche (maybe not quite what Husserl meant by it, but I mean by it, the kind of looking that holds lightly as just what it is without enriching it, which in my opinion is the better concept though strictly speaking not one really to do with the natural attitude or not except insofar as the latter urges the tight grip that deepens arising in many-partedness, and we don't want that) and watch the game play itself.

the chastity fetish stuff is present absolutely everywhere in the miltonic corpus perhaps even more striking, here in the first 30 lines of paradise lost we get a very descriptive image of a transgender God (ie, a God who "broods on her eggs" like a dove yet "impregnates the abyss")
