Space Force acquisition branch plans hiring push

The top civilian overseeing the Space Force’s acquisition branch says the command aims to hire 100 employees each month as it rebuilds following last year’s civilian purge.

“We’re doing a full-court press,” Natalie Riedel, executive director of Space Systems Command, said in a release Wednesday. “It’s an aggressive goal, but we have to get there.”

The Space Force has been hit hard by the Trump administration’s efforts to slash the federal workforce and its contractor support. Civilians make up about one-third of the Pentagon’s smallest service, more than in any other branch of the military.

“The number one priority for me right now is working with our [Human Capital Directorate] team to fill critical vacancies,” Riedel said. “We obviously took a big hit in 2025 — that was a rough year for everyone across the board. We lost a lot of civilians.”

• Law (L.L.B. or J.D.)

• Medicine (M.D.)

• Optometry (O.D.)

• Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.)

• Podiatry (D.P.M., D.P., or Pod.D.)

• Theology (M.Div., or M.H.L.)

Students in these fields will qualify for up to $50,000 in federal loans per year, with a $200,000 limit. There is now an aggregate lifetime loan limit of $257,500, which includes undergraduate loans and some grad PLUS loans.

Those fields no longer defined as professional will have less ability to borrow for their education — only $20,500 annually or $100,000 total.

Wages are up following inflation. These are big wage increases for those at the bottom. But it still nets to a real absolute increase of under $2 an hour, indeed most are under that threshold though the 80th percentile has higher absolute increases than the 20th. If the new price environment is more volatile and complicated then absolute differences might matter.
