idk if you remember this but the very first version of undertale had a message warning people to not datamine and then that was replaced with a "challenge accepted" message so when you combine this with what deltarune says about "theorizing" (literal quote) its like.

By the way, most of the seemingly unused text/files are used.
If you can find the in-game context for an asset, you can show it off. But if you can't, it probably means you haven't looked hard enough. Anything truly unused I'll probably post myself, later.
Living in a world like this, where people can simply cheat out the answers from the code... your impatience has REALLY damaged you, hasn't it?

This notice is put into the attention_hackerz_no_2 script, where the messages are set into variables called demonx, demony, demonz and demond, respectively. The messages are, obviously, used to warn crackers. Due to the naming of the script, the messages are put at the start of the internal strings list, increasing the chance for them to be read.

In 1.001, however, it has been changed to this:

Greetings.
You have made yourself completely clear.
Understood.
I, your humble servant, will follow you to the utmost...

The variables have been renamed to demona, demonb, demonc and demond, too. Curiously, the first line from the version 1.00 message is still present along with its associated variable, but has been moved into scr_namingscreen_check, which is the script that handles naming easter eggs.

Curiously, in 1.05, the copy in scr_namingscreen_check seems to have been changed.

I get a lot of emails to me professing that the characters in this game "felt like r eal people"
to them. when the game's translated, the biggest thing is that it still needs to be able t o

a JP Treasure game it's referred 10 as MELON PAN" in romaji, so might just want to localize it as "LEMON PAN" in romaji as well.
A thing to think about with all the dog puns, do JP people know the word "dog" or should we change all of them to inu puns? Either way is

Uncommon Help
Because the entertai nment localization industry relies so heavily on agencies,
middlemen, paperwork, and tigh t deadlines, creators and localizers are often
separated by a wall of bureaucracy. This separation makes it difficult for both
sides to communicate w ith each other. And even when bureaucracy isn't an
issue, some creators simply don't care to be involved in the localization process.
Either way, it's rare to see a creator actively participate in a localization project.
In Underta/e's case, Toby was directly involved with the English-to-Japanese
localization process from the very start. He provided 8-4 with all of his
development files and copious translation notes ahead of time. He remained
in constant contact with the team via e-mail, answered question after question,
asked question after question, and even met with the localization team in
Japan more than once.

As the localization neared completion, Toby also brought in outside help to
critique key parts of the localization and explain their Japanese nuances to him.
Toby then sent these critiques to 8-4 to improve the final script before release.
In short, although he's understandably not listed as a member of the
localization staff, Toby undeniably played a major part in Underta/e's Japanese
localization.
On a side note, sometime near t he localization's release, Toby mentioned
to me that he'd met with the translator at least once before and t hat
they'd discussed localization concerns in person. He later told me that he
was genu ine ly impressed with her work a nd that she reall y "got" his style.

update: they shared different benchmarking code from the one they used to generate the graphs; they admitted to this 'microbenchmark' being LLM-generated. those familiar with the ZIP file format and its specification think the purported problems with CBZ are total nonsense lobste.rs/s/v653ds/i_g...

I use CBZ to archive both physical and digital comic books so I was interested in the idea of an improved container format, but the claimed improvements here don't make sense.

For example they make a big deal about each archive entry being aligned to a 4 KiB boundary "allowing for DirectStorage transfers directly from disk to GPU memory", but the pages within a CBZ are going to be encoded (JPEG/PNG/etc) rather than just being bitmaps. They need to be decoded first, the GPU isn't going to let you create a texture directly from JPEG data.

Furthermore the README says "While folders allow memory mapping, individual images within them are rarely sector-aligned for optimized DirectStorage throughput" which ... what? If an image file needs to be sector-aligned (!?) then a BBF file would also need to be, else the 4 KiB alignment within the file doesn't work, so what is special about the format that causes the OS to place its files differently on disk?

Also in the official DirectStorage docs (https://github.com/microsoft/DirectStorage/blob/main/Docs/DeveloperGuidance.md) it says this:

Don't worry about 4-KiB alignment restrictions

Win32 has a restriction that asynchronous requests be aligned on a 4-KiB boundary and be a multiple of 4-KiB in size.
DirectStorage does not have a 4-KiB alignment or size restriction. This means you don't need to pad your data which just adds extra size to your package and internal buffers.

Where is the supposed 4 KiB alignment restriction even coming from?

There are zip-based formats that align files so they can be mmap'd as executable pages, but that's not what's happening here, and I've never heard of a JPEG/PNG/etc image decoder that requires aligned buffers for the input data.

Is the entire 4 KiB alignment requirement fictitious?

The README also talks about using xxhash instead of CRC32 for integrity checking (the OP calls it "verification"), claiming this is more performant for large collections, but this is insane:

ZIP/RAR use CRC32, which is aging, collision-prone, and significantly slower to verify than XXH3 for large archival collections.
[...]
On multi-core systems, the verifier splits the asset table into chunks and validates multiple pages simultaneously. This makes BBF verification up to 10x faster than ZIP/RAR CRC checks.

CRC32 is limited by memory bandwidth if you're using a normal (i.e. SIMD) implementation. Assuming 100 GiB/s throughput, a typical comic book page (a few megabytes) will take like ... a millisecond? And there's no data dependency between file content checksums in the zip format, so for a CBZ you can run the CRC32 calculations in parallel for each page just like BBF says it does.

But that doesn't matter because to actually check the integrity of archived files you want to use something like sha256, not CRC32 or xxhash. Checksum each archive (not each page), store that checksum as a .sha256 file (or whatever), and now you can (1) use normal tools to check that your archives are intact, and (2) record those checksums as metadata in the blob storage service you're using.

The Reddit thread has more comments from people who have noticed other sorts of discrepancies, and the author is having a really difficult time responding to them in a coherent way. The most charitable interpretation is that this whole project (supposed problems with CBZ, the readme, the code) is the output of an LLM.

Footer-Based Index. BBF doesn't have to parse a central directory, it only has to read the footer to know where every page is.

That's... what a ZIP file central directory is. A footer. That tells you wheve every page is.

Per-Asset Hashes. Every asset (and the footer) has an associated XXH3 hash with it, so you can quickly verify the entire book or just a single page nearly instantly.

... which again is exactly how ZIP checksums work.

Also, CRC is parallelizable, even within a single file. It's a completely linear function. You can split a file into pieces, compute the CRCs in parallel, and merge the result into a CRC for the whole file (with a bit of math).

This does not pass the LLM smell test. I flagged it as "spam" but I wish we had a flag for "slop"...

Also yes, but a lot of the advancements of LLMs have been diluted to other models by the means of the Transformer architecture (that as you should know powers basically all modern LLMs). Also the field of language modelling is surprising similar to many others in the space (for example Flux, it is a T2I that uses transformers as the backbone for their model).

Suspect's high school classmate says Robinson was the only 'leftist' in a family of 'very hard' Republicans

In a phone interview on Friday, someone who said they were friends with Robinson in high school, who wanted to remain anonymous, said that the suspect was "pretty left on everything" and was "the only member of his family that was really leftist".
"The rest of his family was very hard Republican," the friend said.

Around sophomore year, the friend said, Robinson became more extreme in his political views and would "always just be ranting and arguing about them".

The friend said that they played video games together a lot in high school and noted that the bullet engraving with the arrows was a reference to Helldivers 2 - which we mentioned earlier. He said that the arrows specifically were in reference to "calling in a big bomb that exists" in the game "called the 500 kilogram".

When the friend saw the news on Friday, he said that he was shocked. "I knew he [Robinson] had strong political views, but I never thought it would even go near that far."
