President @ucs.org. Previously: USDOT, White House OSTP, @500womensci.bsky.social. Environmental engineer. Mom. Cyclist. Public Transit Enthusiast. Views my own. She/her.
I'm honored to be the inaugural guest on the new alpha podcast by Dr. Catharine Young, focused on telling the stories of the women whose ideas are changing how we understand ourselves, our planet, and what comes next. We had a lovely wide-ranging chat: www.alphapodcast.studio/gretchen-gol...
A devastating but lesser known part of federal science attacks is on the federal science advisory system. In a new post, I discuss the state of play on federal advisory committees and how the scientific community is pushing back through independent science efforts. blog.ucs.org/gretchen-gol...
On July 14, join me and @ucs.org for a critical conversation on the new book, "On Courage: How to be a Dissident in an Age of Fear", with authors, @juliaangwin.com and @fieldsmeyer.com for the second national call of our Science Rising Initiative. RSVP to join us: act.ucsusa.org/Courage
This week @ucs.org launches a new interactive tool on the staggering 574 attacks on science so far under the Trump Administration. It's hard to convey the full scope and severity of what's happening but this tool helps us make sense of it and what we can all do about it: www.attacksonscience.org
Join me, Arati Prabhakar, Erica Chenoweth and @ucs.org on June 3 to launch Science Rising, a new initiative to speak out and mobilize scientists and science supporters to protect science and our democracy. This moment calls for something new. Let's show up. Join us at www.sciencerising.org
Today we showed up. Feeling proud of scientists and science supporters in this moment. Thank you all. #Standupforscience
Join me, @standupforscience.bsky.social, @ucs.org and scientists around the country in supporting the National Day of Action Rally to Stand Up for Science tomorrow in Washington DC and cities nationwide! It's not a time to stay silent. #StandUpForScience
A year ago, I was advancing climate change research and policy at US DOT. Now, I lead @ucs.org and work to carry forward that vision, defend the progress we've made, and build a brighter future for all. May 2026 bring us all progress towards a safer, healthier, and more just world. Happy new year.
I'm concluding a great week at #AGU25! Great to catch up with colleagues past and present and I am energized by the way the geosciences community is showing up in this moment when our work is under threat. Even with near term setbacks, I'm confident our future is bright.
At #AGU25 and concerned about news of NCAR dismantling? Join us today 4pm CT. We'll cover independent science action and discuss the key science functions we need the government for--like the critical functions that NCAR provides on weather and climate research. agu.confex.com/agu/agu25/me...
Join me and @ucs.org at the @agu.org Annual Meeting next week. I'll be presenting Wednesday along with @carlonimbus.bsky.social and others. You can see our scientific sessions listed here and visit us at booth # 684. See you then! #AGU25 www.ucs.org/science-netw...
In times like these, when our government is trying to suppress dissenting voices, I'm grateful to lead an organization that is independently funded by @ucs.org members, not beholden to government or corporate dollars. Help us preserve that independence this #GivingTuesday. ucs.org/give-science
On scientific topics, especially in public health, federal government webpages have been a trusted way for the public to find reliable information. A CDC webpage with disinformation is dangerous in the short term and erodes public trust in science in the long term. www.cdc.gov/vaccine-safe...
Join me and @green2-0.bsky.social for this virtual event on Building a Resilient Environmental Movement through Best Practices on Wednesday, December 9, 1 - 2 pm ET. Register here: us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regi...
Personal news: We got a heat pump! This seizes on the last days of the clean energy tax credits and eliminates our direct household fossil fuel burning. The big ugly bill will have huge costs for the US energy system, but I'm grateful for US progress and momentum so far. blog.ucs.org/julie-mcnama...
Also Saturday, @ucs.org will be at the Make Billionaires Pay march. Join us: secure.ucs.org/a/2025-9-20-... #ClimateWeekNYC #MakeBillionairesPay
Saturday night, join me for a Climate Film Fest viewing and panel discussion of the White House Effect documentary. www.climatefilmfest.com #ClimateWeekNYC
Join me, @aaas.org Section X, Georgia Tech Public Policy, @crsugimoto.bsky.social, Kei Koizumi, and Barry Bozeman tomorrow to talk about the state of play on Federal scientific integrity and what's next. We have a ton to cover. Join us: gatech.zoom.us/webinar/regi...
In other news, today this transportation nerd rode the inaugural run of one of the Next Gen higher speed @amtrak.com Acela trains, complete is Acela-bration cookies. Let's build more nice things.
The Trump administration is actively dismantling American leadership in science, technology and innovation through its decimation of Federal science agencies' budgets, staffing, and authority. Congress must reject these cuts. #ProtectScience
Grateful for the conversations and ideas this week at @bloomberg.com #BloombergGreen Seattle event. Given the scale of challenges, there is lots we can and must do together to make climate progress.
Honored to be named to @bloomberg.com Ones to Watch List alongside an all-star set of folks announced today, and looking forward to the Bloomberg Green Seattle event next month. Let's get to work. 🧪⚡🌍 www.bloomberg.com/features/202...
I was honored to give the @societyforepi.bsky.social #SER2025 plenary today about what it means to be a scientist in this challenging time. I'm energized from conversations with the epidemiology community and all we can collectively do to action.
The Gold Standard Science Executive Order should set off alarm bells for anyone who cares about evidence-based policy. The EO resurrects efforts to restrict the science that can be used in agency decisions. More from me and @jbd-phd.bsky.social in a new @bmj.com Opinion: www.bmj.com/content/389/...
Our Federal agencies are facing dire threats. The cuts to staffing and programs across the government has already been devastating. And now Congress is working towards further destruction. Today I spoke at a rally outside NOAA. Keep up the pressure. #SaveNOAA. Save Science. Save Lives.
First the EO directs erasure of scientific integrity progress of the last four years. Curiously, it directs agencies to revert to pre-Biden scientific integrity policies, which were strong at many agencies. Here's a snapshot of scientific integrity infrastructure in 2021: www.ucs.org/sites/defaul...
Thank you, @au-spa.bsky.social! I am honored and humbled to get the William K Reilly Environmental Leadership Award alongside the incomparable Dr. Adrienne Hollis this week. A great moment to reflect on progress and all the work that remains to be done. Onward!
Thank you, @symonedsanders.bsky.social, for talking with me and @ucsusa.bsky.social on yesterday's @standupforscience.bsky.social rallies and highlighting how dangerous the Trump administration's assault on U.S. science is for our health and safety. The science community will not be silent.
